On May 27, Consul General Todoriki attended a lecture and demonstration in Portland by Mr. Tango Tanimura, the 20th-generation master craftsman of the traditional Takayama chasen (tea whisk). A chasen is a bamboo tool used to whisk matcha, and its production is an important traditional craft that supports Japan’s tea ceremony culture. It is said that there are only about sixteen officially recognized chasen artisans in Japan, and Mr. Tanimura is one of the few who carry on this precious skill and tradition. Attendees watched with great interest as, through Mr. Tanimura’s expert technique, bamboo was transformed into a tea whisk.

On Sunday, May 17, Consul General Todoriki joined a tour of the Japanese American Museum of Oregon (JAMO) organized by the Japanese Business Association of Portland. This museum at the Naito Center is an irreplaceable hub that conveys the journey of the Japanese American community rooted in Oregon, sharing the fruits of creativity and hard work as well as the memories of joy and hardship. In particular, its efforts to pass on to future generations the painful history of wartime incarceration during World War II — grounded in the voices and records of those directly affected — speak quietly yet powerfully. We extend our gratitude to everyone involved for their cooperation in planning and organizing this tour.
