Y'all, I'm not going to sugar coat it - Gateway Fred Meyer announcing their closure in September is horrible news for East Portlanders, and something we've been warning local leadership about for a few years now.
The continuous illegal camping along the I-205 multi-use path, the ease of access via transit from this area over to the Bottle Drop, and the lack of concern for the safety and livability of East Portlanders from our elected officials is something we've grown accustomed to.
We continue to lose convenient options, making our already difficult lives even harder. We already live in a food desert out here, forcing our neighbors to spend more time and money traveling to find what they need. People who live near highways are generally lower income than most others, and losing amenities means they're living exposed to higher levels of noise and air pollution for no reason at all once the convenience of the location disappears.
Losing this store, and previously Kohl's, means we're not just losing groceries, we're losing a place to buy home goods and even worse, a pharmacy in a time where our federal government already made it harder for some areas like ours to access these services when they permitted the Walgreens / Rite Aid merger a few years ago.
Our neighbors are at risk of losing their jobs, or at least having to spend more time and money traveling to a new location if they choose to do so. I thank UFCW Local 555 for their support of union employees at this store and I apologize to the residents of this neighborhood for the lack of true assistance to the area to prevent businesses from giving up on y'all. We need to make safety and livability a top priority of our elected officials again!
