For more than 50 years, Portland has used design regulations to ensure that new development matches the neighborhood character and is built to last.

Guided by a City Council Resolution and recommendations from the Design Review Reform Report, we will temporarily pause mandatory design review and replace it with a simpler process. This is the first step in a larger effort to improve design review over the long term. With this, we have an opportunity to update and improve the design review process to encourage development while maintaining commitments to urban design.

Portland is home to more than 70,000 residents who identify as Latine, Latinx, Latino/a, Hispanic, Native, Indigenous, Afro-Latino/a, Blacktino/a, Chicano/a, Mestizo/a, or by their country of origin or heritage.

These are vibrant and diverse communities whose labor, leadership, entrepreneurship, creativity, culture, advocacy, and civic engagement have helped build Portland and shape its future --carrying generations of knowledge, resilience, and cultural richness rooted in Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Spain, and Indigenous nations throughout the Americas.

The challenges of racism, discrimination, economic hardship, exclusion, language barriers, and anti-immigrant rhetoric, have only strengthened community resolve.

The City of Portland’s Latinx PDX Employee Resource Group (ERG) reflects this strength in action—creating space for employees to elevate lived experiences, build belonging, advance representation, challenge barriers, and advocate for meaningful change within the City of Portland and beyond.

The community’s accomplishments do not happen because the road was easy. They happen because parents sacrificed, workers persevered, elders shared their wisdom, young people raised their voices, and communities stood together and said, “¡Sí se puede!” (Yes, we can!)—and then proved it.

Experienced performing arts venue operators are encouraged to submit proposals to manage and operate Portland'5 Centers for the Arts, consisting of five performing arts venues in downtown Portland.

The City of Portland seeks a new single operator that will assume venue management and operating responsibilities for all five theaters.

We want to hear from contractors to understand their experience and any pain points with our construction and demolition waste system – drop box companies, dump truck hauling companies, limited space on site for dumpsters, recycling requirements – just about anything involving waste, recycling, or reuse from jobsites.

We’re halfway through Welcoming Week and grateful to the community and partners coming together to celebrate what makes Portland welcoming, vibrant, and strong.

We also launched our Proud Sanctuary City campaign, because immigrant and refugee communities make Portland better -- and we’re proud to stand alongside them.

We invite businesses, churches, schools, and nonprofits to show their support by displaying the posters that come in eight different languages: English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, Simplified Chinese, Arabic, and Somali.

Posters are available at City of Portland community centers and Welcoming Week events, but supplies are limited.

Portland, it’s time to Shift Your Trip! Effective at 10 p.m. tonight, for an estimated five weeks, Oregon Department of Transportation is closing all southbound lanes of Interstate 5, near the Rose Quarter—all hours, all days. Some I-5 ramps and lanes may begin closing as early as 9 p.m.

The closure is for extensive structural repairs and maintenance to I-5 overpasses. Expect significant disruptions for people driving through North and Northeast Portland. Getting around the Portland metro area for work, school, or fun could require extra time, especially during weekday rush hour periods.

Shift Your Trip! Explore alternate modes of transportation like transit, carpooling, biking.

Shift your travel time, telework if you're able, or spend time exploring a local business district to avoid peak congestion on the road. Visit portland.gov/shiftyourtrip for tips from the Portland Bureau of Transportation.

Today, we kicked off Welcoming Week, an opportunity to reaffirm what Portland stands for – a city where immigrants and refugees are welcomed, where families can build a future, and where everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the community we share.
