Located in northern middle Tennessee, we’re about 30 minutes north of Nashville, where Interstates 65, 40 and 24 intersect, and put us within a day’s drive of about 50 percent of all the U. Because of our proximity to Nashville, we have enjoyed opportunity for location of industrial facilities, and in more recent years, location of numerous distribution and warehousing facilities. We were originally Richland Station, named for the railroad depot erected here for the then-new Louisville and Nashville Railroad, with its first scheduled stop in the small settlement on October 31, 1859. Because there was confusion later with another Richland on the railroad lines, Richland Station was renamed Portland in 1888, and then incorporated in 1905. The first election was also held for a mayor and board of aldermen at that time. For most of its history, Portland was known as the "Strawberry Capitol" of the state. The Middle Tennessee Strawberry Festival, is still our trademark, we celebrate this tradition each year in May. In addition to our delicious strawberries, we have southern hospitality and hometown values. Although there's the more recent industrialization of Portland, the beautiful landscape and atmosphere of a rural, agricultural lifestyle are still evident in the outlying areas. Most of the 12,000 or so residents know their neighbors, feel safe and secure in their homes, enjoy the availability of good schools, churches, parks, and civic organizations, and simply love living here. You are welcome to visit with us and see why many believe that this area will be one of the next fastest growing areas of the state. We believe you’ll find Portland a good place to live, work, play, and make an investment.
