Dog Mountain is one of those hikes that sticks with you.

Maybe it's the wildflower-covered slopes. Perhaps it's the sweeping views of the Columbia River. Or it's the sight of Mt. Hood towering above the horizon on a clear day. Or maybe it's just the way your legs remind you of every step long after you've returned to the trailhead.

Now it's your turn to give something back.

Join the Mazamas and Washington Trails Association for a special Juneteenth afternoon trail tending event on one of the Gorge's most iconic trails. We'll tackle a long section near the top, cutting back encroaching vegetation and improving the trail surface to help keep this heavily loved route in great shape.

Will it be hard? Absolutely.

Will the views make it worth it? Absolutely.

This work party is for folks who enjoy a physical challenge, don't mind getting dirty and want to help care for the trails they love.

⛰️ June 19
⛰️ Meet at the trailhead by 12:55 p.m.
⛰️ Safety briefing at 1 p.m.
⛰️ Work until sunset
⛰️ Headlamps required
⛰️ Registration closes June 16

Somewhere between the trailhead and the summit, things can go sideways fast.

A rolled ankle miles from the car. Heat exhaustion on an exposed climb. A bad blister turning into a bigger problem. Hypothermia after weather moves in quicker than expected. A rockfall injury. A partner who suddenly stops feeling “just tired.”

You can’t prevent every emergency in the outdoors. But you can be better prepared to respond when things go wrong.

Mazama First Aid courses are designed to help you stay calmer, think clearer and take action when it matters most — whether you’re helping yourself, a climbing partner or a stranger on the trail.

From Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder to CPR and Stop the Bleed, our courses build practical skills and confidence for real-world outdoor situations.

Your summit skills matter. So do your emergency skills.

Climbing season is officially on.

Over the next few weeks, Mazama teams will be headed for objectives including Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams, Middle Sister, South Sister, Unicorn Peak, Mt. Ellinor, Mt. Ruth and Mt. Hubris.

There’s something special about showing up at a trailhead before sunrise with a group of people equally excited to suffer a little for a good day in the mountains. The shared beta, encouragement on the uphill, post-climb burgers, stories that somehow get better every time they’re retold — that’s a big part of what makes Mazama climbing culture what it is.

Whether you came up through BCEP, Intro to Alpine Climbing or another sister organization, we’d love to climb with you.

Anyone can hike with the Mazamas and take our courses, but Mazama membership is required to join our climbs. If you’re ready to turn your training into mountain days with a strong climbing community behind you, now’s a pretty good time to join.

Last year’s Bob Wilson Grant recipients spent their time in the Frey navigating towering granite spires, alpine approaches, shifting Patagonian weather and long multi-pitch days high above Laguna Toncek — and they’re bringing the stories, lessons and hard-earned beta back to the Mazama community.

Join Aimee Filimoehala, Angie Brown, Kate Scanlan and Maureen O’Hagan for a firsthand look at their climbing expedition to the Frey in Patagonia.

From the alpine cirque above Laguna Toncek to classic multi-pitch routes rising out of the granite, the team will share stories from the trip, lessons learned along the way and plenty of useful beta for anyone dreaming about climbing in the Frey someday.

Join us for a Labor Day weekend spent winding through forests, lava fields, alpine crossings and some of THE BEST views Mount Hood has to offer. Round the Mountain — 3 days. Roughly 40 miles. The Timberline Trail — has a way of pulling people in year after year.

Maybe it’s the rhythm of moving through wildly different terrain around Mt. Hood. Perhaps it’s the shared experience of spending an entire weekend immersed in trail miles, mountain weather, good company and a cozy lodge experience.

Right now, Mazama members can register for $775. After today (5/22), pricing jumps to $825 for members and $950 for nonmembers. Considering a Mazama membership is just $88/year, joining practically pays for itself with RTM alone — and gets you a full year of member pricing, programs and mountain community along with it.

That’s a wrap on Advanced Rock 2026. 🧗

The class closed things out over the weekend, climbing at Smith Rock, celebrating hard-earned skills and reliving memories made in the last four months.

From anchors and crack technique to route-finding, rope systems and long days on the sharp end, this crew put in the work all season long.

Thinking about joining the trad climbing ranks next year? Keep an eye out for the Advanced Rock 2027 info night, likely returning next November.

Not all trail days look the same around here.

Some Mazamas are knocking out thru-hikes. Some are moving mindfully through the forest. Some are tackling the legendary Triple D. Others are wandering wildflower trails with dogs, learning geology on the move, tracking research projects or simply chasing a good sunrise before work.

Ramblers. Peak baggers. Bird nerds. Distance junkies. Casual wanderers. We’ve got all kinds.

Somewhere between your first self-arrest practice and kicking steps up a steep snowfield, things start to click.

Steep snow changes the game. Footwork matters more. Ice axe placement matters more. Judgment matters a lot more.

Mazamas Steep Snow & Ice Course starts July 1 and is designed for experienced climbers ready to sharpen alpine movement skills, gain confidence on steep terrain and prepare for bigger mountain objectives ahead.

This isn’t learn-to-climb. It’s where alpine judgment gets real.

Registration is open now: mazamas.org/SSI

This is it. Capstone weekend at Smith Rock for Families Mountaineering 101.

After nine months of climbing, learning, belaying, campfire hangs, early mornings, new skills, big milestones and even bigger memories, FM101 families are wrapping up their official coursework together.

Programs like FM101 are about so much more than climbing. Families that adventure together build trust, confidence, resilience and lasting connection. Kids learn problem-solving and outdoor skills. Adults rediscover play, challenge and community. Everyone walks away a little stronger.

And somewhere along the way, climbing partners become lifelong friends.

What a journey for this crew. Already feeling some FOMO? Keep an eye out for the 2026–27 FM101 season.

As more of us head back onto trails, crags and climbing routes this season, it’s worth remembering that these places need care too.

Last Saturday, the Madrone Wall Preservation Committee, alongside Clackamas County Parks & Forest, the Mazama Advanced Rock Program and Trailkeepers of Oregon, completed trail repair and improvement work at Madrone Wall Park valued at nearly $4,000.

At the Mazamas, stewardship is part of the culture. We learn skills, build community and give back to the places that give us so much in return.

Looking for ways to plug in this season? Check the Mazamas calendar for upcoming trail tending and stewardship opportunities and consider supporting fellow organizations doing important work across Oregon’s outdoor spaces, including Trailkeepers of Oregon, Forest Park Conservancy and Oregon Trails Coalition.
