We won't go backwards. 🌲

Tribes have fought for the right to govern their own lands, resources, and futures. ITARA is the next chapter in that story — and it expires June 22, 2026.

This video is for every Tribe that has invested in a plan. Every forest managed on Tribal terms. Every generation deserves better than federal red tape standing between them and their own land.
The Secretary of Interior has the authority to extend ITARA right now. Congress can pass permanent legislation, specifically H.R. 5515, to secure tribal self-governance.

Approximately 80% of Native-held forests are now managed by Tribal Nations through self-governance or co-management agreements.

That marks a major shift — and a complete reversal from when the first IFMAT report was released in 1993.

This transition reflects decades of Tribal leadership, advocacy, and stewardship reclaiming decision-making over forest management systems rooted in long-term responsibility to the land and future generations. 🌲

The clock is ticking. ⏳

The Indian Trust Asset Management demonstration project (ITARA) expires June 22, 2026 — and we need the Secretary of Interior to extend it NOW.

ITARA gives Tribes the authority to manage their own trust assets — forests, natural resources, and lands — on their own terms. Letting it expire would be a step backwards after 50 years of hard-won self-governance progress.

That's a wrap on the 49th Annual National Indian Timber Symposium. 🌲

Day 4 closed out four days of learning, connection, and action — with the ITC President's Report, concurrent workshops on biomass, fire management, self-governance, and forest inventory, followed by the Annual Business Meeting and Awards Banquet.

✏️Highlight: The ITC Board and Delegates gathered to celebrate the Wilcox and Picard Award recipients — honoring the leaders and legacy-makers of Tribal forestry. All workshops were held at the College of Menominee Nation, a fitting home for this gathering.

Thank you to our hosts — the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin and the Stockbridge-Munsee Community — for welcoming us to your homelands and making this gathering possible.

The 50th Annual National Indian Timber Symposium will be hosted by the San Carlos Apache Tribe in 2027. See you there. 👇

Day 3 of took us off the resort and into the forest. 🌲

Today's full-day Tribal Tour brought attendees onto the lands of both the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin and the Stockbridge-Munsee Community — seeing sustainable forestry, ecological restoration, and land stewardship firsthand.

The evening brought member Tribes together for the ITC General Membership Meeting — an opportunity to connect directly with the Board of Directors.

Tomorrow is the final day. Concurrent workshops on biomass, fire management, and self-governance, followed by the Annual Business Meeting and the Awards Banquet honoring excellence in Tribal forestry. 👇

Day 2 of opened the way it should — with ceremony. 🌲

An invocation by Luke Besaw of the Menominee Language & Culture Code, the Posting of the Colors by Menominee and Mohican veterans, and the Skud Nation Drum Group set the tone for a full day of general sessions.

The day closed with a Host Welcome Dinner at Woodland Bowl, courtesy of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin.

Tomorrow we head into the field — a full-day Tribal forest tour of Menominee and Stockbridge-Munsee lands, followed by the ITC General Membership Meeting. 👇

Day 1 of is underway on the homelands of the Menominee and Stockbridge-Munsee people. 🌲

Today's pre-symposium workshops brought our community together across the land — from USDA partnership sessions and silviculture field trips to a black ash basket weaving workshop and a canoe on Legend Lake.

✏️ The highlight of the evening: the opening of our Legacy Storytelling Studio, where community members began recording their ITC memories for our milestone 50th Symposium in 2027. History in the making — literally. (Raffle is open too! 🎟️)

Tomorrow we gather. 🌲

The 49th Annual National Indian Timber Symposium kicks off in Keshena, Wisconsin — on the homelands of the Menominee and Stockbridge-Munsee people — where Tribal leaders, resource professionals, and policymakers will come together to discuss how self-governance and traditional ecological knowledge serve as the foundation for navigating today's shifts in policy, climate, and technology.

This year's highlights include:
🌿 Self-Governance — Sessions on Tribal sovereignty, legislative advocacy, and self-determination contracts
🌱Workshops — Biomass, carbon sequestration, self-governance, fire management, and technical forestry training
🌲Field Learning — A Tribal forest tour showcasing the Menominee's world-renowned sustainable management practices
🎉Community — Cultural activities, the Shake the Timbers Golf Tournament, and an awards banquet honoring excellence in Tribal forestry
