Sauvie Island School Sauvie Island School: a Public Charter School offering Place-Based Education to the children of Sauv

“Place-Based Education is the process of using the local community and environment as a starting point to teach concepts in language arts, mathematics, social studies, science, and other subjects across the curriculum. Emphasizing hands-on, real-world experiences, this approach to education increases academic achievement, helps students develop stronger ties to their community, enhances students’

appreciation for the natural world, and creates a heightened commitment to serving as active, contributing citizens.”
-David Sobel, author of Connecting Classrooms & Communities

4th & 3rd grade had an incredible outing on the Multnomah Channel with the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership this last week. Getting out on the canoes and observing the surroundings from the water was very memorable! They wrapped up the outing with a hike through Wapato looking at birds and plants along the way and learning fun new things like how to make a sound like a mouse in distress to attract the attention of an owl.
