Joy Orchard is a free to pick public orchard providing a creative social space while demonstrating the use of agricultural practices that promote pollinator habitat, biodiversity and the preservation of Maine's agricultural heritage. The orchard currently consists of about 40 Apple trees, mostly heritage cultivars on standard rootstock, along with Pears, Peaches, Cornelion Cherries, Yellowhorn and other minor fruits. In 2017 we will continue planting a wider variety of fruit ( Paw Paws, Apricots, Asian Pears, Elder Berries, Plums, Japanese Cornels and several more!) and adding many more herbaceous companion plants. In future years we hope to expand the orchard even more, but this will depend on the interest level of the community and how much support for the project there is.
