Early this morning at 2:54 AM Portland FD was dispatched to a two car motor vehicle accident with injuries in the area of 900 Portland Cobalt Road. Dispatch advised responding units that the vehicles were on fire. Upon arrival, PFD was met with two cars fully involved on fire with a utility pole and wires down on the scene. We treated had a total of 3 patients on scene, requesting 3 ambulances as well as Middlesex Paramedic. All patients were transported to Hartford Hospital. RT66 westbound is down to one lane today as the repair work is completed to the utilities in the area.

Portland Fire Department was proud to be apart of this year’s Memorial Day Parade once again. Yes it rained…Yes we got wet… but the meaning behind the event goes much deeper then the water ever will. Thank you to everyone who braved the cold and rain to honor and respect those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.

Portland Fire would like to formally introduce our new Engine 2 which is housed at our Gildersleeve Station on Main Street. Yesterday we had a traditional “wet down” to celebrate its arrival. We had a great turn out and are grateful for everyone who made this possible for our department.

On Saturday May 16 at 12 noon Portland Engine Company 2 will Welcome our New Engine. After almost 4 years we will have a traditional "Wetdown" and push in ceremony at Company 2 594 Main St in Portland. Out Mutual Aid Partners will assist in the Wetdown of the New Engine. The public is invited to attend.

Last night members from Portland, South Fire, and the City of Middletown gathered together at the Wesleyan pool in Middletown for a joint dive team training. Teams worked on skills such as an underwater cutting station, patterns on the rope line, and confidence drills underwater, such as removing your mask and putting it back on while underwater. As well as demoing some new equipment. It was a great turn out by all three teams.

This morning at 6:03 PFD was dispatched out to a vehicle fire at 984 Portland Cobalt Rd. While en route dispatch advised that it was a construction loader on fire. Upon arrival of the Chief he confirmed a working vehicle fire within minutes it was upgraded from one loader on fire to three separate pieces of construction equipment on fire. Crews arrived on scene and quickly extinguished the fire. The FMO office was called and is investigating the incident.

PFD was out training last night. We had members representing all 3 stations as well as the Chiefs office and our EMS coordinator on scene. We had the unique opportunity to utilize the Connecticut Fire Academy Confined Space trailer. It was setup at South Fire District headquarters in Middletown. It’s a very challenging way to get comfortable in confined spaces while wearing your SCBA. The instructors are top notch and took the time to train and help each member. A special thank you to the Connecticut Fire Academy for allowing this to happen as well as to the South Fire District Firefighters IAFF Local 3918 for the invite.
