Maintaining and expanding chimpanzee enclosures is essential to providing lifelong, high-quality care and depends on critical equipment like a welding generator. When we needed to replace our diesel-powered generator late last year, you stepped in to help—and we are deeply grateful❣

Securing supplies and equipment in Cameroon can be complicated and costly 😬, so we purchased a discounted generator in the U.S. and added it to an existing shipment bound for Cameroon—often called “Africa in Miniature” for its rich diversity of landscapes, climates, and cultures. 🌍

After months at sea, our generator has arrived and is already hard at work maintaining and improving our infrastructure. Thank you again for helping us build a future for the chimpanzees in our care and those who will need rescue and sanctuary! ❤🐵

How do you run a veterinary clinic and laboratory in the middle of the jungle… without electricity?🔬

Sanaga-Yong is around six hours from the nearest city, so sending blood and faecal samples away to a laboratory isn’t exactly straightforward…

But doing things on site isn’t exactly straightforward either — especially when you don’t have access to reliable electricity!

The generator is absolutely crucial to the construction team, but it’s just as important for our veterinary team. It gives us the power to run donated equipment like our centrifuge, allowing us to process samples on site and get results that help us make important decisions about our chimps’ health.

We also use the generator to charge equipment such as our microscope and head torches — the latter being particularly important when we’re carrying out surgeries and procedures.

So when people wonder how it’s possible to run a veterinary clinic and laboratory in the middle of the jungle without a reliable electricity supply… this is how.

It may not look like a conventional laboratory, but when you’re six hours from the city, having the ability to run tests on site can make all the difference. Cover photo of Dr Christian by .world

We hope your weekend was as relaxing as Cecile’s!

Most afternoons Cecile can be found lounging in the sun in her forest enclosure, having some R&R while patiently waiting for dinner to be served - what a life!

Chimpanzees know first aid!

Kanoa recently injured his hand, and while the veterinary team were keeping a close eye on his wound, his group (especially the ladies Cecile and Mannie) were making sure to keep it clean, and most importantly make Kanoa feel reassured and loved.

Chimpanzees are incredibly empathetic, and it’s beautiful to see the way they pay such close attention to the wellbeing of their friends.

We think Kanoa injured his hand on a sharp branch somewhere out in the forest. Thanks to his devoted first aiders, we’re pleased to report his hand is now fully healed. We think he might be a bit sad to no longer be receiving special attention 😂

Cecile turned 25 this month, and to celebrate her special birthday, we’re sharing some highlights from her babysitting sessions with Amaia 🥹💕

She’s the most perfect aunty to Amaia — kind, caring, patient (very) and always there to comfort her when she needs it. But she’s also very fun and always up for a silly game!
Happy 25th birthday, Cecile! We hope you know just how special you are. 🥰

Muna, female age 22, is wet from the rain!

It is the rainy season in Cameroon, which means daily rains, often thunder and rain storms that turn the skies a dramatic green and can bring large gusts of wind. Our infrastructure is designed to withstand mother nature's forces, but sometimes we need to make repairs. Those repairs and funded by our generous supporters, thank you!
