As we begin Native American Heritage Month, we would acknowledge that we are gathering on the unceded traditional lands and waterways of the Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other Tribes who made their homes along the Columbia River and on what we now know as the Portland metro area. We recognize that systemic policies of genocide, forced removals, and land theft continue to impact many Indigenous and Native American families today. EMO respects and honors the past, present, and future Indigenous communities of this land, thanks those who continue to serve as stewards, and encourages you all to support local Indigenous- and Native-led organizations.

Today, Nov. 1, is the first day of Willamette Week’s Give!Guide campaign, which raises millions of dollars each year for Portland metro area nonprofits. We are excited to announce that NEFP was once again selected to participate!

NEFP is Oregon’s busiest food pantry. NEFP is committed to providing food with dignity, keeping in mind culturally specific needs. We hope you consider donating to NEFP.

Today EMO is mourning the death of Dolores Huerta, the pioneering feminist activist and labor organizer. Dolores Huerta was a paradigm-shifting force in this universe. Committed to non-violent action and change, Dolores Huerta’s dynamic personality and strategic mind led her to work with Community Service Organization (CSO) starting in the 1950s, and she never stopped fighting for justice. She helped found the United Farm Workers union and worked as an activist and organizer for decades. Anybody who met Dolores or saw her speak can attest to her passion, charisma, intelligence, humor and bravery. She left the world a better place than she found it.

Eternal rest grant unto her, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.

🌲 Building community resilience across Northeastern Oregon!

Last week, EMO’s Community Resilience Team members Taylor Silvey and Peter Fargo traveled through five counties in Northeastern Oregon to help establish cross-sector Community Resilience Teams in Malheur, Umatilla, Union, Baker, and Wallowa Counties.

These teams bring together community members, local organizations, and partners from different sectors to identify local health concerns, explore solutions, and strengthen preparedness for extreme weather and seasonal emergencies. By building on local knowledge, relationships, and resources, each team will work toward practical, community-driven approaches to help their communities become healthier, safer, and more resilient.

We’re grateful to everyone who took the time to share their ideas, experiences, and hopes for their communities. We’re excited to see what we can accomplish together!
