Register today for our annual gala! EMO’s gala supports our vital services for the most vulnerable in our communities: refugees and immigrants, people experiencing food insecurity, low-income people living with HIV, unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness, and survivors of domestic violence. We will also honor extraordinary individuals and organizations whose courage, moral vision and commitment to action have contributed profoundly to making Oregon, and the world, a better place.

We will also be honoring three incredible people. The Rev. Cecil Prescod will receive the Ecumenist of the Year award; Sue Van Winkle will receive the Humanitarian Award and Jeff Hammarlund will receive the Justice Award.

In partnership with Golden Rainbow Haven, Christ UMC is hosting a documentary screening of No Place to Grow Old at Christ United Methodist Church (12755 NW Dogwood St, Portland).

No Place to Grow Old, set in downtown Portland, is a poignant documentary following the lives of three older adults navigating the harsh realities of life without a home. Through their stories of hardship and resilience, the film offers an intimate portrayal of the challenges they face, while also shining a light on the systemic issues contributing to their plight.

Following the screening, a panel of local experts will discuss the realities and challenges of finding and providing safe, affordable housing. There will also be a community fair for resources and a silent auction to benefit Golden Rainbow Haven. Refreshments and childcare will also be provided.

Golden Rainbow Haven is a Washington County based nonprofit organization that wants to help provide affordable, safe, and inclusive housing for LGBTQ+ Seniors.

On Aug. 26, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution went into effect, assuring that the federal government could not deny someone the right to vote based on gender. was established by Congress in 1971 to commemorate the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

However, it wasn’t until 1965 that the Voting Rights Act provided similar rights for other historically excluded groups, including black women. So while we celebrate and honor the important victory that the 19th Amendment was, we must also remember that no victory is ever truly complete if someone is excluded.
