SCAM ALERT!!!!!!

The Jay County Sheriff's Office has received reports of individuals impersonation law enforcement officers and contacting citizens at their places of employment. These callers falsely claim to represent the Jay County Sheriff's Office and tell individuals that an arrest warrant has been issued for failing to report for jury duty.

The scammers attempt to obtain personal and financial information from their targets, including spouses' and family members names, telephone numbers, home addresses, vehicle insurance information, and bank account numbers. They may also claim that the alleged warrant can be resolved over the phone by paying a fee for missing jury duty.

These calls are consistent with known telephone scams in which individuals impersonate law enforcement officers and threaten arrest to obtain personal information or money. Legitimate law enforcement procedures do not involve resolving alleged arrest warrants or missed jury duty obligations through unsolicited telephone payments as described in these reports.

How to Protect Yourself

*Hang up immediately if you receive a suspicious call. Do not provide any personal or financial information.
*Do not send money or make payments to resolve an alleged arrest warrant or missed jury duty obligation over the phone.
* Block the caller's number after ending the call. Scammers may call repeatedly and attempt to pressure you into responding before moving on to other target.
*Be alert to high-pressure tactics. Scammers may create a false sense of urgency by claiming that time is running out or that immediate payment is required to avoid arrest.
*Verify the information independently. If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, contact you local law enforcement agency directly using an official telephone number before taking any further action.

If you believe you may be the target of this scam, the Jay County Sheriff's Office encourages you to contact your local law enforcement agency for assistance in determining whether the call is legitimate.

Remember: Never provide personal or financial information to an unverified caller and never allow threats or pressure tactics to force you into making a payment.

Please help us in welcoming Jay County's newest Merit Deputy, Kodi Mumbower. Deputy Mumbower has been with the Jay County Sheriff's Office for the last 8 years, serving in the Jail Division. Kodi most recently served as Jail Commander. Kodi also serves as a Reserve Officer with the Dunkirk Police Dept. Kodi was Officially Sworn in today and will begin the transition from the Jail Division to the Merit Deputy Patrol Division.

The Jay County Sheriff’s Office would like to take this opportunity to congratulate CSI First Sgt. John Petro on his retirement from the Indiana State Police. John has dedicated 35 years to the Indiana State Police and has served his home County of Jay and surrounding Counties with pride and professionalism. John’s commitment to public service doesn’t stop with his retirement, he will transitioning to a civilian role with the Indiana State Police in a similar role and we look forward to working with him in that capacity.

The Jay County Sheriff's Office is seeking a dedicated, professional, and experienced leader to serve as Jail Commander. This position is responsible for overseeing the safe, secure, and efficient operation of the Jay County jail while ensuring the highest standards of professionalism, accountability and care.

**2027 pay $60,944 annually**

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

*Direct and supervise daily jail operations.
*Lead, train, and evaluate correctional staff.
*Maintain facility security, safety, and order.
*Ensure compliance with applicable laws, policies, and correctional
standards.
*Oversee inmate booking, housing, classification, transportation, and release procedures.
*Manage scheduling, staffing, equipment, and operational resources.
*Promote professionalism, teamwork, and respectful treatment of inmates and staff.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
*Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
*Sound judgement and the ability to make decisions under pressure.
* Experience in corrections, detention, law enforcement, or a related field.

Minimum Qualifications:
*High School diploma or equivalent.
*Relevant supervisory or corrections experience is preferred.
*Must successfully complete any required background investigation, screening, and any other pre employment process.

The Jay County Sheriff's Office has been informed of fraudulent activity where a caller is posing as an employee of the Sheriff's Office. The caller will claim to be an employee of the jail and attempt to collect money from individuals that have recently bonded out an inmate. The caller may also claim to be a bail agent and state that the payment was insufficient for a prior bond. The Jay County Sheriff's Office, as well as any Law Enforcement agency will not attempt to collect money over the phone. If you receive this type of call, hang up and report it to Law Enforcement.

Today we had a visit from the fifth grade students at the Jay County Christian Academy.  The Students stopped by with an awesome poster to thank the employees of the Sheriff’s Office for everything that they do for our community, and brought us donuts on this day of remembrance. Acts of kindness like this from the community are why we love what we do. Thank you!
