Today, several Oregon laws passed during the 2026 legislative session are taking effect, adding new protections for immigrant and refugee communities in schools, workplaces, healthcare settings and public institutions.

Among the changes are stronger workplace protections for employees updating work authorization documents, limits on the use of immigration status in civil proceedings and new policies designed to help schools and public institutions respond appropriately to immigration enforcement activity.

Laws can be complicated. Questions shouldn’t be.

Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services is here to help individuals and families understand their rights, explore their options and navigate an often-changing immigration system.

If you have questions about immigration legal services or would like to schedule an intake, contact us at [email protected] or call 503-542-2855.

“The measure of every society is found in how it safeguards the dignity of the human person.”

— Pope Leo XIV, Magnifica Humanitas

At Catholic Charities of Oregon, that belief guides everything we do.

We see dignity in the refugee family building a new life. In the senior choosing between groceries and medication. In the woman seeking safety, stability and hope. In every person who walks through our doors.

A person’s worth is not defined by their income, housing status, country of origin or circumstances. Every individual deserves to be seen, respected and supported.

Together, with the help of volunteers, donors, partners and advocates, we’re working to build communities where dignity isn’t just a principle. It’s a practice.

At Catholic Charities of Oregon, we believe every person has inherent dignity and worth.

Our mission calls us to serve our neighbors with compassion, respect and care, regardless of their faith, background, immigration status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity.

This Pride Month, we reaffirm our commitment to creating welcoming spaces where people can access support, find community and be treated with the dignity every person deserves.

Rooted in Catholic social teaching and guided by our belief in the sanctity of human life, we remain committed to serving all who come through our doors.

Because everyone deserves to be seen, valued and treated with compassion.

Food insecurity doesn’t take a summer vacation.

As grocery costs remain high and many households continue feeling the impact of changing benefits and economic uncertainty, Catholic Charities of Oregon is preparing to host its first-ever Pop-Up Food Pantry for clients and residents of our affordable housing communities.

📅 June 17
🕒 3-6 p.m.
📍 2740 SE Powell Blvd., Portland

With support from community partners, donors and volunteers, we hope this will become a quarterly resource that helps nourish neighbors and provide a little extra stability when it’s needed most.

We’re also looking for volunteers to help with setup, distribution and cleanup. If you’d like to lend a hand, visit ccoregon.org/volunteer. Link also in bio.

Together, we can help ensure more of our neighbors have access to the food and support they need this summer.

Know Your Rights Tip

You do not have to open your door unless officers have a signed judicial warrant.

If immigration officers come to your home, ask them to slide the warrant under the door or hold it up to a window.

An administrative immigration warrant is not the same as a judicial warrant signed by a judge.

Knowing the difference matters.

Reliable information and trusted legal support can help families feel more prepared and less fearful during uncertain moments.

Consejo Conozca Sus Derechos

Know Your Rights Tip

Do not sign documents you do not understand.

If an immigration officer asks you to sign paperwork, you have the right to ask for an interpreter or speak with a lawyer first.

Signing documents without understanding them could affect your immigration case or legal options.

Take your time. Ask questions. Seek trusted legal guidance.

Catholic Charities of Oregon’s Immigration Legal Services team is here to help eligible community members navigate the process with trusted support.

Consejo Conozca Sus Derechos

Haga preguntas. Busque orientación legal confiable.

Know Your Rights Tip

You have the right to remain silent.

If you are questioned by immigration officers or law enforcement, you do not have to answer questions about your immigration status, where you were born or how you entered the country.

You can say:
“I choose to remain silent.”
“I would like to speak with a lawyer.”

Staying calm and knowing your rights can help protect you and your family.

Catholic Charities of Oregon provides low-cost immigration legal services and community education for eligible individuals and families.

Catholic Charities of Oregon is launching an Emerging Leaders Board — and we’re looking for young professionals and community-minded leaders who want to make a meaningful impact across Oregon.

We believe strong communities need fresh ideas, diverse perspectives and people who care deeply about service, connection and creating lasting change. The ELB will help support Catholic Charities through volunteerism, advocacy, community engagement, fundraising support and helping expand awareness of our mission and programs.

Whether your background is in business, nonprofit work, education, healthcare, communications, public service, law or something entirely different, there’s value in bringing new voices and lived experiences to the table.

This is an opportunity to grow your leadership skills, connect with others who care about their communities and help support neighbors experiencing poverty, displacement and injustice.

Our first organizational meeting will take place June 11 in Portland.

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember and honor the service members who gave their lives in service to our country.

At Catholic Charities of Oregon, we also recognize that for many veterans and military families, the challenges do not always end when service does. Housing instability, food insecurity, isolation and financial hardship continue to affect far too many in our communities.

Today, we hold space for remembrance and gratitude while recommitting ourselves to caring for neighbors with dignity, compassion and support.

Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Memorial Day weekend often marks the unofficial start of summer. Longer days. More time outside. Closets getting swapped from winter layers to warm-weather essentials.

As you make room for the season ahead, consider setting aside, or purchasing, a few items for neighbors who could use them.

Catholic Charities is currently collecting summer clothing and accessories for people experiencing hardship across our programs. Lightweight clothing, sunscreen, hats, backpacks, reusable water bottles, tarps, and other warm-weather essentials can make a real difference during the hottest months of the year.

For many of the people we serve, summer doesn’t mean vacation. It can mean increased exposure to heat, instability, and difficult choices. A small donation can help someone feel more comfortable, more confident and more prepared for the season ahead.
