Hello FLEX Students and Families,

My name is Aubree, and I’m a senior here at FLEX. Along with another student, Mina, I’m organizing a bake sale this Monday, October 20th, at the FLEX Main Campus from 1:00 PM to 5:45 PM to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a remarkable organization dedicated to saving lives through research, education, and access to quality care. Thanks to Bank of America, every dollar you donate will be tripled!

We chose Monday because it’s picture day, and many students will be on campus, making it a perfect time to gather support.
We’d love for you to stop by and support this important cause. Even if you aren't coming in for picture day, your presence means a lot to us! You’ll find a selection of treats from local Beaverton bakeries including Bundtlets from Nothing Bundt Cakes, gluten-free cookies from Blue Moon Bakery, loaf cake slices from Fern Ridge Bakery, and much more.

If you prefer, you can also make a donation without purchasing anything, every contribution helps!

We will gladly accept both cash and card payments, whether you’re buying a treat or simply donating. Your support truly makes a difference, and Mina and I would be so grateful to see you there.

If you have any questions, feel free to email the front office at [email protected].

Thank you for your time and generosity,
Aubree

According to a recent survey, BSD students who are chronically absent cite stress and feelings of being overwhelmed as the number one reason that they’re not coming to school. We understand. Anxiety is real.

Take a look at these tips for identifying anxiety in your child and what you and your school support system can do to help.

There are a lot of reasons that students — especially high schoolers — miss school. They can feel anxious. They can be struggling to make positive social connections. They may need to take care of a younger sibling or work.

Whatever the reason, if your child isn’t coming to school, please reach out to a teacher, school counselor or principal. There are things that your school can do to help.

Watch this video to learn more.

Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, dealing with peer conflicts or facing some other potentially serious difficulty.

How can you ensure your child is on the right track?

📌 Ask your student if they feel engaged in their classes. Ask if they feel safe and welcome in their school.
📌 Make sure they aren’t missing classes because of challenges with behavioral issues or school discipline policies. If so, contact your student's counselor to discuss.
📌 Monitor their academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors, if necessary. Make sure teachers know how to contact you.
📌 Stay on top of their social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school. Students without many friends can feel isolated.
📌 Encourage them to join meaningful after-school activities, including sports and clubs.
📌 Notice and support them if they’re showing signs of anxiety.

Start the school year off right with on-time and consistent attendance!

Addressing chronic absenteeism is key to increasing academic achievement, improving graduation rates and giving young people the best chance at success in their adult life.

What can you do as parents/guardians?

📌 Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day.
📌 Encourage your kids to lay out their clothes and pack backpacks the night before school.
📌 Help your child maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night’s sleep.
📌 Develop contingency plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor or another parent.
📌 Try to schedule dental and medical appointments and extended trips when school isn't in session.
📌 If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to their teacher, counselor or principal about how to make them feel more comfortable and excited about learning.
📌 If your child must stay home due to illness, make sure they get missed assignments from teachers.

Start the school year off right with on-time and consistent attendance!

Too many absences – excused or unexcused – can keep students from feeling a sense of belonging and ultimately succeeding in school. Just two missed days per month can really knock students off track.

Please help your child prioritize attendance this year. Need help? Reach out to your teacher, school counselor or principal to work on solutions together.
