ONE NIGHT = FIVE FELONY CAPTURES for K9’s Murphy, Harcos, and Kylo. It was a busy night… Murphy started off the evening by searching for a suspect who had stolen a vehicle and eluded north precinct officers in the vehicle before bailing on foot. Murphy tracked the suspect and located him hiding completely concealed in thick brush… Murphy and Kylo then responded to assist members of the Focused Intervention Team who’d had armed robbery suspects, driving a stolen vehicle, run from them. Murphy and Kylo split up and went to work. After a lengthy block search, Murphy alerted on two garbage cans in a residential back yard. The suspects surrendered and were safely taken into custody. A gun was also located… Kylo then responded to east precinct to help track down another stolen vehicle/elude suspect. He searched the block and outstandingly alerted to the suspect hiding on a roof!… Harcos ended the night by searching for yet another stolen vehicle/elude suspect in East precinct… After a lengthy search, Harcos closed in on the suspect, who again ran and attempted to forcibly enter another occupied vehicle. With Harcos and patrol officers hot on his heels, the suspect surrendered… Great work everyone! Thank you to the patrol officers, FIT officers, Air Support and all others who worked so hard and teamed up to capture these motivated suspects. Teamwork makes the dream work!

Today, members of the Portland Police K9 Unit recognized Officer Sarah Burns for her outstanding performance in 2021.

In 2021, Officer Burns generated work that led to the most successful K9 deployments. Her efforts and the use of our K9 teams were critical in safely locating and apprehending dangerous individuals.

To show her our appreciation, she was awarded a letter of commendation, our unit’s challenge coin, K9 attire, and our brand new K9 morale patch. These items are only awarded for exceptional performance.

Of note, Officer Burns is the first officer to receive the new K9 morale patch. We hope to issue more as we continue to recognize outstanding performance. Job well done Officer Burns.

We are deeply saddened to announce the loss of retired Portland Police K9 "Maverick." Maverick was our gentle giant. He was huge in stature, with an even bigger personality. Maverick was a fan favorite amongst his fellow officers, as well as the hundreds of community members who had the opportunity to meet him throughout his career. He was born and raised in Everett, Washington, and was hand-selected by PPB K9 trainers after he aced a lengthy and rigorous testing process. He arrived in Portland in February, 2012 where he began his PPB Patrol K9 school. Maverick was certified as a Portland Police K9 in July of 2012 and quickly began showing why he was chosen, as he enthusiastically located suspects and protected the Portland community. His first credited capture was July 7th 2012, and he would go on to rack up 160 captures throughout his career. In October, 2012 Maverick was chosen to join the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT), which only a small handful of K9's have been selected for in the history of the Portland Police Bureau. During a SERT deployment in April of 2018, Maverick sustained a significant injury as he charged in to protect his fellow officers and apprehend an armed suspect. Maverick was not one to lay around, however, and after a few months of healing, he returned to service with the same determination. After a long and outstanding career, Maverick finally retired in August of 2020. He lived out his golden years running around his acres of country-side property with his handler and family. Sadly, Maverick passed away today due to natural causes. He was surrounded by his loving partner and family. He will forever be a part of our team. Thank you "Ricky." You did good... Rest in Peace. We've got it from here.

Chester ringing in the first capture of the new year: Citizens called in a couple engaging in indecent and lewd conduct. When officers attempted to contact the pair, they eluded in a vehicle, crashed nearby, and attempted to escape a box-in prior to fleeing on foot. Chester was called to locate the suspects, in which he found hiding under a shed. The suspect-driver was wanted on multiple felony warrants. “That a boy, Chester.”
