Over the past two days, personnel from our Air Rescue Division conducted mandatory annual live-fire training at the New Hampshire Fire Academy, in accordance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 139 requirements for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) readiness.

The training evolutions consisted of ARFF firefighters assigned to the Portland International Jetport-Maine and dual-certified structural firefighters who are cross-trained to augment ARFF operations. This ensures operational readiness and compliance with FAA regulatory standards for emergency response at Part 139-certificated airports.

Commercial Street Car Damage Caused By A Tugboat,
Not An Airplane

PORTLAND, Maine – After an investigation by the FAA and Casco Bay Lines, it was determined that the 35-pound metal pipe that caused significant damage to a vehicle on Commercial Street broke off from a nearby tugboat. The piece appears to be a part of a tie down.

On April 30, 2025 at 10:10 p.m., Portland Police were dispatched to the Casco Bay Lines parking lot at 56 Commercial Street for a report of motor vehicle damage. Officers discovered a pipe weighing approximately 35 pounds had struck a vehicle, shattering the rear window and denting the frame.

Based on the damage and location, it appeared at the time the object may have fallen from an airplane. The FAA was notified and worked with Casco Bay Lines to conclude its investigation today.
