Serve Your Community: Join the Portland Schools Building Committee

Now that we have an approved bonding referendum, an important next step in the process is the selection of members for a building committee. The building committee will play an essential role in providing oversight for the renovation and expansion of Valley View Elementary School, renovation of Gildersleeve Elementary School, and improvement of the Secondary Complex.

The commitment for building committee members is significant and will involve regular meetings over the course of the next five years. While this is a substantial commitment of time, the reward is the opportunity to help create schools that will serve Portland students for generations to come.

Are you interested?

The Portland Board of Selectmen is looking to appoint 7 to 9 individuals to the building committee. The Selectmen are particularly interested in appointing individuals with the following skills and experience:

· Experience in technical trades, such as HVAC, plumbing, general contracting, roofing, etc.

· Experience in the construction industry

· Experience with architecture and design

· Experience with finance, accounting, contracts, or law

· Experience with school or commercial construction projects

· Elementary education experience, including general education and special education

· Interior design experience

Interested parties must be Portland residents. If you are interested, please email your resume to First Selectman Mike Pelton at [email protected] before the end of the business day on Wednesday, June 10. A committee will review applications and make recommendations to the Board of Selectmen. The goal is for the Board of Selectmen to appoint the building committee at their meeting on Wednesday, June 17.

Thank you for your interest.

Our K-2 students have been making some noise (and learning a new language!) 🎤 Over the last few weeks, they joined Miss Kaite for incredible Spanish Music sessions!

It wasn’t just about hitting the right notes; it was about immersive learning and pure joy! 🤩 The students had a blast singing "Don Alfredo, Baila!" (and dancing up a storm!) 💃🕺, visiting a Spanish farm with "Vengan a ver mi granja," 🐮 and using scarves to create magic with "La Mariposa.🦋

We are so proud of their enthusiasm and how quickly they are picking up new words! 🥳✨

📢 ATTENTION PARENTS! 📢

It’s that time of year! 🗓️ The great school library book hunt is officially ON! 🕵️‍♂️🔍

All library books are now DUE so we can prep the shelves and get everything ready for next year! 📚🏫

Please help your child check those secret hiding spots:
🛏️ Under the bed
🎒 Deep inside backpacks
🛋️ Between the couch cushions
🚗 In the backseat of the car
🧸 Behind the toy bins

THANK YOU so much for your help in getting our favorite stories back home to our school libraries! ❤️📖 Let's see how many we can find today! 👇
