This evening, the Portland Public Schools Board of Education recognized three team members who retired during the 2024–2025 school year.
Theresa Getchell - Theresa Getchell began her journey with Portland Public Schools in 2000, teaching English Language Arts at the High School. Over the past 25 years, she has inspired countless students to think critically, write with purpose, and find their unique voice. Known not only for her passion for literature and dedication in the classroom, Theresa is also admired for her generosity and deep commitment to giving back to the community she loves.
As she steps away from the classroom, we are proud to recognize her many contributions. Thank you, Theresa, for 25 years of exceptional service, heart, and impact, both in and beyond the classroom. You will be truly missed, and we wish you all the best in your next chapter.
Evelyn “Evie” Griffith - Evelyn “Evie” Griffith joined Portland Public Schools in January 1999, beginning a remarkable 25-year journey of service. As a trusted and caring school bus driver, Evie has safely transported generations of students, always with a warm smile, steady presence, and unwavering commitment to our kids.
From early morning routes to snowy days and everything in between, Evie has been a dependable and beloved member of our school community. She officially retired in January 2025, but true to her generous spirit, she has already returned to help with trips and to cover routes when needed.
Thank you, Evie, for your years of dedication and service. You’ve made a lasting impact, and you will be deeply missed. Enjoy every moment of your well-earned retirement!
Libby Richardson, pictured below - Libby Richardson joined Portland Public Schools in 2005 and has dedicated the past 20 years to supporting and advocating for our students. As a Special Education teacher, Libby has brought compassion, patience, and professionalism to her work each and every day. Her impact reaches far beyond the classroom—shaping lives, building confidence, and helping students reach their full potential.
Libby’s unwavering commitment to inclusive education and her unique ability to connect with students and families have left a lasting mark on our district. Her legacy is one of care, excellence, and deep dedication to the Portland community.
