🚨 STORM ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE FOR PORTER COUNTY RESIDENTS & BUSINESSES 🚨

The Porter County Emergency Management Agency, in partnership with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS), has established a One-Stop-Shop Information Center for residents and businesses affected by the severe storm on August 11, 2026.

🤝 Multiple agencies. One location.

Those impacted by the storm will have the opportunity to meet directly with representatives from multiple local, state, and federal agencies to:

✅ Ask questions about storm-related assistance
✅ Learn about available assistance programs
✅ Get help navigating the application process
✅ Receive information on mold cleanup and vital records replacement
✅ Get guidance regarding insurance, housing, FEMA assistance, BMV needs, and more

All units, stand by for dispatch:

As of 0600 hours this morning, September 1, 2026, we have completed our final shift as Porter Dispatch. For more than 50 years, we have been on the other end of the radio here in Porter.

Generations of us have answered the phone when our residents needed help, sent our officers into the unknown, and remained behind the radio until everyone made it home.

We weren't the face of the department. We were its voice.

Technology has changed. Officers, Chiefs, and Dispatchers have come and gone. But the voice from Porter remained. Today, we want to recognize every dispatcher who has ever sat behind a radio for the Town of Porter, whether full-time or part-time. You are part of our history, and we are proud to have been part of yours.

To our community and our officers, thank you for trusting the voice on the other end of the line. It has been our privilege to answer the call and serve our community.

In 2014, another chapter in our story began. The Towns of Porter and Chesterton chose to bring their dispatch operations together. Two departments, two communities, one room. That began a partnership that would last more than twelve years.

When our officers or residents needed someone, we answered. For more than twelve years, the voices coming out of this building helped protect two communities and the men and women who served them.

Moving forward, your calls will be answered from a different room, and a new chapter will begin.

But what happened inside this dispatch center mattered. The friendships, the laughs, the cries, and the hard calls all mattered.

To every Porter and Chesterton dispatcher who has been part of this center, past and present, we are proud of what we built together.

To the officers and communities who trusted us for all these years, thank you for allowing us to be the voice on the other end of the radio. It has been an honor.

📢 **IMPORTANT DISPATCH & BUSINESS HOURS UPDATE**

Effective Tuesday, September 1 at 6:00 AM, the Porter Police Department’s Dispatch Center will officially consolidate with Porter County Dispatch.

Our non-emergency phone number will remain the same:

After business hours, calls to this number will be routed to Porter County Dispatch for police-related non-emergency assistance.

Beginning September 1, the Porter Police Department’s regular business hours will be:

🕗 Monday-Friday 8:30 AM-4:30 PM

Please note that administrative services, whether by phone or in person at the Police Department, will be available during regular business hours. This includes:

• Police and incident reports
• Crash reports
• Impound and vehicle releases
• Records requests
• Other administrative police department business

If you need an officer or have a police-related issue outside of business hours, you can still call 219-926-7611 and your call will be routed to Porter County Dispatch.

⚠️ **IMPORTANT NOTICE: PLEASE CONSERVE WATER**

Due to widespread power outages caused by yesterday’s severe storm, numerous Town of Porter wastewater lift stations are currently without power.

Residents and businesses are asked to **limit water usage as much as possible until power is restored.** Conserving water will help prevent the lift stations from becoming overwhelmed and reduce the risk of wastewater overflows.

Please postpone non-essential water use, including:
• Laundry
• Dishwashers
• Long showers
• Other activities that use large amounts of water

Normal toilet use and necessary household water use may continue, but we ask everyone to conserve wherever possible.

Town crews and emergency personnel continue to work throughout the community addressing storm-related issues. Please limit unnecessary travel, use caution, and **stay away from all downed power lines. Treat every downed line as energized.**

🚨 **STORM UPDATE – PORTER, INDIANA** 🚨

The Town of Porter has experienced significant storm damage, including downed trees, power lines, and widespread power outages.

The Porter Police Department is aware of the situation and is working with the Town and other emergency personnel to address hazards and assist where we can. Please understand that there are numerous issues throughout town, and it will take time to work through them all. We are doing our best to get to everyone as quickly and safely as possible.

**Please help keep yourself and our emergency personnel safe:**

⚠️ Stay away from downed power lines and treat ALL downed lines as energized.
⚠️ Do not drive around barricades or through areas blocked by emergency personnel.
⚠️ Avoid flooded roadways and areas of standing or moving water.
⚠️ Be cautious of downed trees, debris, and damaged structures.
⚠️ If traffic signals are without power, treat intersections as four-way stops.
⚠️ Please limit unnecessary travel so emergency crews can get where they need to go.

If you encounter a life-threatening emergency, call 911. For non-emergency issues, please be patient as crews work throughout the community.

🚪 Knock Knock… Who’s There?

If it’s a legitimate peddler in the Town of Porter, they should be properly licensed with a town issued photo ID.

Let’s be honest, nobody loves unexpected door-to-door sales visits. We get it. That’s exactly why the Town of Porter has a structured permitting process in place. It’s not about making things difficult for the seller, it’s about protecting our residents.

Why the permit process matters:
• Helps deter scams and bad actors
• Ensures only vetted individuals are going door-to-door
• Confirms businesses are legitimate and accountable
• Requires background checks and insurance coverage

How the process works:
• Application submitted with initial fees through the Clerk-Treasurer
• Background check and review by the Police Department
• Approval required by the Chief of Police
• License fees paid and permit issued
• Photo ID provided by Porter PD — must be worn and visible at all times

⏳ Important: This process can take up to 5 working days. If someone shows up claiming they “just got approved today,” that’s a red flag.

Rules peddlers must follow:
• Each person must have their own license (no sharing)
• Allowed hours: 9:00 AM to sunset, Monday through Saturday
• Must respect “No Soliciting” and “No Trespassing” signs
• Must carry proper insurance
• Must display their Porter-issued photo ID at all times

(Some exemptions apply for legitimate non-profits, religious groups, local students, and newspaper carriers.)
