🌟 Two Dogs. Two Empty Kennels. Two Lives Changed. 🌟

When these two super adoptable pups find homes, it doesn’t just change their lives — it opens up space for dogs who need extra time, care, and patience.

Adopting them = saving more than one life.

That's why we've chosen to post our two most likely to be adopted dogs today; COLA and SIXTEEN!

You can see more about them on our adoption's website. https://www.portalesnm.gov/services/departments_a-f/planning___zoning/see_our_dogs.php

A behind‑the‑scenes peek at what your hardworking Animal Control team is up to! And yes, if you see our Department Head fighting her computer in mortal combat… the grant process is behaving normally.

We’ve been busy bees applying for grants—cross your paws for us!

🐾 Grants We’re Waiting To See if We Get:

New Building Grant — Nearly $200,000 for an extra building, plus utilities and ADA upgrades.

New Mexico Veterinary Board Grant — $50,000 for TNR, shelter pet spay/neuter, and free community vouchers.

Private Medical Grant — Medical funds + spay/neuter support for shelter pets AND upgraded cat kennels.

ASPCA Infrastructure Grant — Staff are knee‑deep applying for this one, working to improve our quarantine, rabies watch, and custody areas.

🐱 Grants We’re Actively Working On That We Did Get:

Animal Welfare Grant — $30,000 project for the cat room is DONE with construction and now being furnished! Reimbursement paperwork is underway.

DAPP & HCP Free Vaccine Grant — Vaccines are almost gone! If you want free vaccines, now’s the time to come in. Low turnout means we may order fewer next year.

TNR Funding — This year’s TNR funds are officially spent! 117 cats fixed. Free vouchers are probably all used, but we’re waiting for final surgeries to confirm if any no‑show funds return.

(And no city purchased computers were harmed in the writing of these grants. Just feelings.)

Public Service Announcement: Protect Your Outdoor Pets During Extreme Heat

As temperatures climb well above normal across eastern New Mexico, we’ll be driving through neighborhoods over the coming weeks to ensure outdoor animals have continuous access to water and shade. Please take a moment today to double‑check your pets’ setup — it makes all the difference for their safety.

Why This Matters:
- Heat stress happens fast. Dogs, cats, and livestock can overheat in minutes when exposed to direct sun or high temperatures.
- Dehydration is dangerous. Water bowls can tip, evaporate, or become too hot to drink. Fresh, cool water is essential throughout the day.
- Shade prevents heatstroke. Even hardy outdoor animals need a place to escape the sun. Trees, tarps, covered porches, and shelters all help keep body temperatures stable.

We’re checking for their well‑being. Our goal isn’t enforcement — it’s prevention. We want to make sure every animal in our community stays safe, healthy, and protected during this heat wave.

What You Can Do Today:
- Provide clean, cool water in a sturdy container that can’t be knocked over.
- Make sure your pet has reliable shade that lasts throughout the day, not just in the morning or evening.
- Check on them frequently — conditions can change quickly in extreme heat.
- Bring pets indoors whenever possible, especially during peak afternoon temperatures.

Keeping animals safe is a community effort. Thank you for doing your part to protect the pets who depend on us.

"I reported an animal abandoned and all animal control did was leave a door tag! Why?!"

When we receive a report that an animal may have been abandoned at a residence, we are legally required to verify that no one is caring for the animal before taking action.

This is because many “abandoned” calls turn out not to be true. For example:

- Unseen caretakers — Someone may be living at the home but doesn’t have a vehicle.

- Irregular schedules — A caretaker may come and go at unusual hours.

- Limited visibility — Neighbors may simply not notice someone checking on the animal.

Because of these situations, we must complete our due diligence before removing an animal from a property.

To do that, we leave a 48‑hour notice on the property. This notice informs anyone responsible for the animal that they must contact us to confirm the pet is not abandoned. In roughly 95% of cases, someone does respond, and we have confirmation that the animals are not abandoned.

If no one contacts us within 48 hours, we then have a legal basis to determine that the animal has been abandoned and can take appropriate action.

It’s also important to know that if an animal is in immediate danger (such as heat stroke, badly injured, etc), we are legally allowed to intervene sooner.

If we can't reach the legal "emergency" threshold but we are still concerned that an animal isn't being fed and watered, we will check on the animal throughout those 48 hours, provide our own food/water (if we can), and monitor the health of the animal.

Every year, we scoop up so many lost souls who need a soft place to land — 211 strays this year alone. But the ones who truly break our hearts are the 47 pets surrendered by their families.

They watched the only home they’ve ever known walk away, and they’re left wondering what they did wrong.

They didn’t do anything wrong.

They just need someone new to love them forward.

Let’s shine a little extra light on these sweet faces and help them find the forever homes they deserve. 💛🐾

🚨 Portales Pet Parents — Important & Actually Pretty Awesome News! 🚨

The city’s registration crackdown started for one big reason: to protect our community from unvaccinated pets.

If you missed the discounted rabies clinic or the free city registration event, don’t panic — you’ve still got a chance to save money and get compliant.

🎉 A Clovis event is offering FREE rabies vaccinations!
Yes… FREE. Zero dollars. No excuses.

Why does this matter?
Because the fine for not having a current rabies vaccine can be up to $500 per pet over 3 months old. And trust us — you do not want to deal with how we check animals for rabies. (Let’s just say it involves the brain… and not in a sci‑fi way.)

So do your wallet, your pet, and your community a favor:

Grab that free rabies vaccine.

After, swing by the Portales Animal Shelter at 305 N Industrial Dr to get your registration taken care of.

Keeping your pet safe shouldn’t be scary — and right now, it’s not even expensive.

Meet Brennen, our gentle Husky girl who has been waiting longer than any other pup in our care.

Somehow, this incredibly sweet soul has had zero interest, and we can’t understand why — because she is truly something special.

Brennen is an adult, medium-sized Husky (41 lbs) with the calmest, cuddliest personality. She loves leaning in for affection, enjoys quiet moments, and gets along well with other dogs as long as they respect her space. She’s the kind of dog who blossoms with kindness and gives it right back.

She came to us as a stray on 03/20/26, and she’s been patiently hoping someone will finally see her. She’s been ready for adoption since 03/24/26, but day after day, she watches other dogs leave while she stays behind.

If you’ve been looking for a loyal, mellow companion who just wants to love and be loved, Brennen is your girl.

Please share her story — her family is out there, and she deserves to be found.
