What an incredible day! Today was our first-ever Play, Paint, and Celebrate Day, and it was a huge success!

Students spent the day enjoying fun activities, making memories with friends, and sharing lots of smiles and laughter. This special event was made possible by the creativity and hard work of our amazing teachers, along with the support of several wonderful parent volunteers. We are so grateful for everyone who helped make this day so memorable for our students.

To wrap up the celebration, our 2nd graders got to "paint" their teachers as a reward for being the top grade level during our Hustle Fundraiser. It was the perfect ending to a fantastic day and provided plenty of laughs for students and staff alike!

Thank you for your continued support throughout the year. We hope you enjoy this video highlighting some of the fun from today!

Today, I had the privilege of working alongside seven amazing students who served as "Principal for the Day" at Haverhill!

These student leaders spent the day handing out Buzz Cards, recognizing and praising positive behavior, supporting students in the cafeteria and on the playground, helping during every recess, and assisting with our schoolwide Fun Day activities. They took their responsibilities seriously and represented our Hive in a tremendous way.

We even squeezed in a Chick-fil-A lunch and held two official staff meetings to discuss important topics such as walkie-talkie etiquette and keeping their lunch workroom clean. Needless to say, they had plenty of opinions and ideas to share!

I couldn't have asked for better teammates. Their leadership, enthusiasm, kindness, and willingness to help others made a positive impact throughout the entire day.

Thank you to our student principals for an incredible day. The future is bright at Haverhill! 🐝

πŸ’¦πŸ Last Friday, our students enjoyed a well-earned Super Soaker Reward after successfully meeting our school-wide behavior challenge.

This challenge was designed to encourage safe, responsible, and respectful behavior in the cafeteria and on the playground- two places with many opportunities to practice making positive choices. Over the course of the challenge, students worked hard to follow expectations, show kindness, solve problems appropriately, and demonstrate self-control during lunch and recess.

Students were rewarded for their efforts by getting a chance to spray their recess supervisors, Ms. Flenorl and Mr. Zonts, with water! There was plenty of laughter, excitement, and school sports as everyone got in on the celebration! πŸπŸ’¦

🎢🐝 Congratulations to Haverhill's own Mr. Hageman! 🐝🎢

We are excited to celebrate an incredible accomplishment by our music teacher, Mr. Hageman, who has been elected President-Elect of the Michigan Music Education Association (MMEA)!

Mr. Hageman has been serving music educators across Michigan for several years. He first joined the MMEA Board of Directors in 2022 as the Southwest Michigan Regional Representative before transitioning to the role of Advocacy Chair in 2024. In that position, he worked to promote music and arts education throughout the state, advocating for funding, legislation, and opportunities that support students and teachers.

On May 30, Mr. Hageman officially began a six-year leadership commitment with MMEA, serving two years as President-Elect, two years as President, and two years as Immediate Past President. In this role, he will continue advocating for music education, contribute to statewide publications, help lead the Michigan Music Conference, and support the organization's strategic vision for the future.

We are incredibly proud to have such a dedicated educator representing not only Haverhill Elementary and Portage Public Schools, but music educators across the entire state of Michigan.

Please join us in congratulating Mr. Hageman on this well-deserved achievement!

Yesterday, we had the joy of celebrating one of our favorite Portage Elementary traditions- the Senior Walk-Through!

This year’s walk-through was especially unique because many of the seniors were able to see our brand new building for the very first time! It was such a treat not only for the graduates, but also for former teachers and staff to reconnect, reminisce, and reflect on how much these students have grown over the years.

We are so proud of our Hornets, and as Mr. Zonts always says, β€œOnce a Hornet, always a Hornet!” 🐝

We are so excited to celebrate our graduating Hornets!

A huge THANK YOU to Randy Schau for sharing his time, talent, and creativity with the Hive! πŸπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Over the past few weeks, Randy has been hand-painting an incredible United States map on our playground blacktop for our Hornets. Although the project is still in progress, we could not wait to share a sneak peek of his amazing work and the excitement it is already bringing to our students and staff!

We are so grateful for community members like Randy who continue to make Haverhill such a special place for kids. Thank you for helping create something that will spark learning, curiosity, movement, and fun for years to come! β€οΈπŸ–€πŸ’›

Throughout the year, our students have been practicing their writing skills while building meaningful connections with some amazing students from Central High. It was so special to finally meet face-to-face, share conversations, and strengthen those relationships even more.

We are so thankful for opportunities like this that help our students grow as writers, communicators, and caring members of our community!
