URGENT MESSAGE The Portage Fire Department has been made aware of individuals or a company soliciting donations around the city following the recent disaster while falsely representing an affiliation with our department.

Please be advised: This organization is not affiliated with the Portage Fire Department. Donations collected by this group do not go to the Portage Fire Department, our firefighters, or any department-led disaster relief effort.

We urge residents and businesses to use caution when approached for donations. Before giving, please verify the organization and confirm where your contribution is going. The Portage Fire Department does not solicit donations door-to-door or through third-party groups without clear public notice from the department or the City.

Anyone who is contacted by this group, has concerns, or believes they may have donated under false pretenses is encouraged to report the incident to local law enforcement.

⚠️ RUNNING A GENERATOR? PLEASE WATCH THIS.

If you’re using a portable generator during an outage, take a few minutes to review these important safety reminders.

✅ Always operate generators outdoors — never inside a home, garage, basement, shed, or enclosed space.
✅ Keep generators at least 20 feet away from your home, with the exhaust pointed away from doors, windows, and vents.
🔥 Generators get extremely hot and can start a fire. Keep them away from your home, decks, porches, dry grass, leaves, and anything else that can burn.
✅ Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide alarms.
✅ Never use a generator in wet conditions unless it is properly protected from moisture.
✅ Allow the generator to cool completely before refueling. Gasoline spilled on a hot generator can ignite and cause a serious fire.

Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and deadly, and a generator operating too close to your home can also create a serious fire hazard.
