MORE MILES! Major congrats to both the Towns of Highland and Munster on the long-awaited opening of the "Bridges over Ditches" project! This now formally opens the Highland-Munster Pathway connecting the Pennsy Greenway to the Erie-Lackawanna Trail via Lincoln St. in Highland. In Munster, there is an existing separated path along a NIPSCO utility corridor, and special thanks to them to leasing the land for the project at no cost to the communities. To date, over 30 miles of regional trail are on NIPSCO-owned land.

This critical 3.2 mile link will connect tens of thousands of nearby residents to each community and help them safely access nearby Wicker Park, which is a popular destination for bikes and peds. The link will also be part of the national American Discovery Trail.

Hey - what's the BIG IDEA? Last week, Friends of the Berrien County Trails launched an initiative to work with local municipalities, and other partners, towards an ambitious goal: connecting 100 miles of continuous trails across Berrien County, Michigan. At the launch, the group honored Gary Wood for his years of passionate effort to promote trails in Harbor Country. You can view their bold master plan here: https://ow.ly/XKTs50ZbAWw

At long last, the towns of Highland and Munster will be holding a ribbon cutting ceremony officially opening the "Bridges over Ditches" project. The event takes place on Monday, June 15th at 1:30 PM. The attached map shows the location of the ceremony. Walking and bicycling to the site is strongly encouraged since nearby street parking is very limited.

This is part of the newly named Highland Munster Pathway connecting the Pennsy Greenway to the Erie Lackawanna Trail. The project was first programmed by NIRPC in 2008, and after years of determining a route through the maze of above and underground utilities, the project was approved for construction in 2025. This long-awaited project stands as a lasting investment in regional connectivity, recreation and quality of life.
