In 2022, the Port Washington Water Pollution Control District applied for a grant of $5.85M to rehabilitate over 16,000 linear feet of gravity sewer main in our system. In 2024, the grant was awarded to us. Lining our sewer lines helps protect the water quality in Manhasset Bay and improve the integrity of the District’s sanitary collection system. We began lining pipes throughout Port Washington in areas we knew were high priority due to aging infrastructure or problem areas due to root intrusion, infiltration, etc.
In late 2025, we detected high Sodium Chlorides coming into our treatment plant. We started back tracking sources from the plant out to our pump stations and collection system until we found heavy concentrations coming from pumping station “J”, located on Yacht Club Drive, After a CCTV inspection of the neighborhood, we found that salt water infiltration into the sewer mains on Beachway was causing the high readings. This area consists of 8 and 12 inch vitrified clay pipe – installed in the early 1950’s – which joints every three feet, exposing it to a large amount of ground water – no matter how high or low the tide. We determined it was a top priority to rehabilitate the pipes with a CIPP (Cured In Place Pipe) liner.
Using funds that we received from the 2024 Grant, we were able to quickly engage Arold Construction, to complete this job. All in, the job took less than a week to complete. We immediately saw a significant decrease in sodium chlorides in our collection system, and the overall flow to our plant has been reduced.

When PAL voluntarily surrendered its license agreement to the PWWPCD earlier this year, their one request was that the Richard L’Esperance Sr. name remain on the clubhouse. We honored that request and now, we are even more excited to recognize two outstanding individuals who spent decades helping to keep our children on the fields and off the streets. Sgt George Mahoney started the PW PAL programming back in 1946 and volunteered his time to build sports programs for 30 years. His successor, Mike Leeolou, then took over the reigns in 1978 and also did an exceptional job running these teams for 29 years! We are thrilled to be able to show our recognition of their dedication to the youth sports in our town.

With the generous support of the Dejana Foundation and the hard work of everyone at the PWWPCD, we are committed to breathing new life into Sunset Park and its ballfields. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place later this spring, but we are excited to share a preview of the progress already underway.

The fields are currently being utilized by four youth organizations, five days a week - and the general public on the weekends. Baseball, soccer, softball, and flag football are all well underway at the park — an adult softball league will soon be returning as well.

The basketball court will be completely replaced over the summer, new landscaping plans surrounding the clubhouse are under review, and we are finalizing plans to turf the infield later this year. This is only the beginning!

There is still much more to accomplish, and we will be looking to our residents and community partners for support and collaboration along the way. The ballfields were seriously neglected for the past few years. There is flooding, a broken irrigation system, and deterioration throughout the ballfield, dugouts, and clubhouse. Among other needs, we are still seeking funding and donations for a field lining machine, a baseball mound, and clubhouse improvements so we can bring the facility up to the standard our town deserves and bring the ballfield back to what it was in it’s ‘heyday.’

Most importantly, the park is not only SAFE from development — it is finally receiving the proper attention, investment, and transformation it has deserved for years.

If you are interested in donating to Sunset Park, a new nonprofit organization, Friends of Sunset Park has been set up to oversee it’s management and fundraising. Please contact them today to make a donation. [email protected]

We are BEYOND thrilled to accept this donation today from the very generous Peter & Jeri Dejana Foundation. This town is about to see some amazing changes at it’s very own Sunset Park. The basketball court will be completely renovated, better drainage so the field and surrounding area doesn’t flood, and much needed improvements to the clubhouse to name just a few immediate improvements. This park is truly such a gem in our town and we are so excited to make it into an even better park than it has ever been. All thanks to the help of the dejana foundation, and the friends of sunset park. Thank you for believing in us and in our town. 💙💙

There have been flooding issues near the ballpark at Sunset Park for years. It has made it difficult for kids to get to and from the fields and nearly impossible for coaches to access the shed. Today, we have a team working there to remediate the issue and a sump pump is being installed. Thanks to a very generous donor, this work is being done at NO cost to our taxpayers! We at the district are excited to see progress. And there are MANY more improvements coming! Will post pictures along the way.

THANK YOU to Congressman Suozzi for pushing to get us this money. The funds received will go towards major upgrades we desperately need at 2 of our town's pump stations.

$1,092,000 secured for Port Washington Water Pollution Control District! New reliable and efficient wastewater pump stations will improve public health and water safety of Mill Pond and Manhasset Bay.

Here’s what Commissioner Melanie Cassens said about the funding:
“We are deeply grateful to Congressman Suozzi for his commitment to protecting public health and essential infrastructure. This funding means a safer environment, reduced risk of system failures, and a more resilient wastewater system that will serve our community for decades to come.”
