🎈 Don't let balloons foil your celebration.

From graduations to weddings, balloons add a festive touch. Simple precautions can help ensure your event stays safe.

Balloon Safety
​When balloons are released into the air, they can interfere with and create hazards for aircraft, wildlife and power lines. A Mylar or foil balloon, or metallic ribbon, contacting a power line can lead to a spark or short circuit that causes power outages and fires. It also creates a shock and electrocution hazard for any utility crews working elsewhere on the line. Here are tips for a safer celebration:

🎈Keep balloons and kites away from overhead power lines.
🎈Never release balloons into the air. Secure them to weighted objects.
🎈Puncture foil balloons to release helium.

​Drone Safety
Flying a drone near power lines is risky enough, but the closer it gets the greater the risk of signal interference and loss of control. Follow these tips:
•Fly at least 200 feet away from power lines and below 400 feet.
•Do not fly in dark or windy conditions.
•Read and follow the drone manufacturer’s instructions.

Whether it’s balloons, a drone or a kite, if anything becomes entangled in power lines or enters a substation never attempt to retrieve it. Call PSEG Long Island immediately at 1-800-490-0075.

Consider Alternatives
​Instead of releasing balloons for celebrations or memorials, choose these inspiring alternatives:
•Blow bubbles, toss eco-friendly confetti or use noise makers
•Decorate outside with streamers, wind spinners, or similar items
•Host a candlelight vigil (battery operated)

Power lines are high up in the air for a reason and any contact is hazardous.

Today, we proudly celebrate Flag Day, honoring the Stars and Stripes that represent the freedom, unity, and sacrifices that have shaped our nation.

Since June 14, 1777, the American flag has stood as a symbol of courage, resilience, and hope. It flies over our firehouses, schools, homes, and communities as a reminder of the values we hold dear and the countless men and women who have defended them.

🎉 Congratulations Captain Elizabeth Weisburd! 🎉

The Port Washington Fire Department proudly congratulates Captain Elizabeth Weisburd on her induction into the Town of North Hempstead Women’s Roll of Honor.

Beth has dedicated years of service to the Port Washington community through public safety, education, the arts, and civic engagement. A Volunteer Fire Medic since 2018, she is currently serving her second term as Captain of Fire Medic Company and continues to demonstrate exceptional leadership, dedication, and compassion in service to our residents.

Beyond the fire department, Beth serves as Chairperson of the United Methodist Church Council and as a Board Member of HEARTS Port Washington, supporting fundraising efforts that help sustain arts programming for students throughout the district. She has also volunteered countless hours stage managing community events, including PortFest, and supporting the Port Washington Summer Show.

Her commitment to education is equally impressive, having served as Vice President and Trustee of the Port Washington Union Free School District Board of Education, President of the Weber Home-School Association, and a board member of the Ed Foundation.

Beth’s unwavering dedication to serving others embodies the very best of our community. Port Washington is stronger because of her leadership, generosity, and commitment to making a difference.

Today, the Port Washington Fire Department proudly honors the incredible strength, courage, and resilience of all cancer survivors. Your determination inspires us all, and your stories are a testament to the power of hope and perseverance.

We also stand with those who are currently battling cancer. Please know that you are not alone. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, your families, caregivers, and the medical professionals who support you every day.

On this National Cancer Survivors Day, we recognize every victory, celebrate every survivor, remember those we have lost, and continue to support the fight against cancer.

June 6, 2026 – 82nd Anniversary of D-Day

Today, the Port Washington Fire Department proudly joins our nation in commemorating the 82nd Anniversary of D-Day, one of the most pivotal moments in world history.

On June 6, 1944, more than 150,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, France, beginning the liberation of Europe from tyranny during World War II. Their extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to freedom changed the course of history and secured the liberties we enjoy today.

As firefighters and emergency responders, we understand the meaning of service, duty, and sacrifice. We honor the brave men who stormed the beaches of Normandy and all those who served during World War II. Their legacy continues to inspire generations to answer the call when others are in need.

Please join us in remembering the heroes of the Greatest Generation and reflecting on the price of freedom.

We will never forget their courage. We will never forget their sacrifice.

At approximately 7:45 p.m. this evening, the Port Washington Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire on White Oak Drive. Being that units responding could see smoke in the distance a signal 10 Working fire was transmitted before arriving on scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy fire on the first and second floors of a single-family split-level residence. Officers from the Port Washington Police Department were first on scene, gained entry confirmed that no occupants were home at the time of the fire and successfully rescued the homeowners’ dog.

Firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control and conduct extensive overhaul operations. The fire caused a partial collapse of the second floor and garage.

There were no civilian injuries reported however several firefighters sustained injuries during firefighting operations, with six members transported to area hospitals for evaluation. All injured firefighters are reported to be in stable condition.

Mutual aid assistance was provided by several neighboring fire departments. The incident was operated under the command of Chief of Department Donald Reese.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Recently members of the Port Washington Fire Department visited several local organizations for community outreach and educational events. Firefighters attended a truck day and “People in Your Community” event at Temple Beth Israel, a “People in Your Community” event at Chabad of Port Washington, and joined the Port Washington Police Department for a “Community Heroes” event with the preschoolers of Archangel Michael Church.

These visits gave children the opportunity to meet local first responders, learn about fire safety and emergency services, and see the apparatus and equipment up close. Thank you to all of the organizations for welcoming our members and helping strengthen the connection between first responders and the community.
