💧🥯 Save the Bagel—Protect Our Water
Port Washington students are helping shine a light on a critical issue: how overuse of water (especially during peak irrigation season) increases strain on Long Island’s aquifer and contributes to saltwater intrusion.
This important initiative is led in part by Port Washington Water District Commissioner Mindy Germain, who commented, “Our groundwater is out of balance, and saltwater intrusion is advancing. We know many of the best practices already. What we don’t have is the scale and coordination needed to make a real impact.”
This reinforces what we see every summer: outdoor water use, particularly lawn irrigation, is one of the biggest drivers of demand. By following irrigation guidelines, installing required smart controllers, and reducing unnecessary watering, residents can play a direct role in protecting our water supply.
Excited to see our community leading the conversation on conservation and sustainability. Check out the full articles on this week's issues of Newsday and Long Island Press.
