FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Port St. Joe Police Department
Chief Jake Richards

Early this morning, officers with the Port St. Joe Police Department responded alongside the Gulf County Sheriff’s Office, Port St. Joe Fire Department, and Gulf County EMS to a reported structure fire at the Pine Ridge Apartments in Gulf County.

Upon arrival, Officer Kesterson encountered heavy smoke conditions and located a child near the rear door of the apartment who was barely breathing. Officer Kesterson immediately removed the child from the apartment and began providing first aid until Gulf County EMS arrived and transported the child to the hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Shortly thereafter, firefighters with the Port St. Joe Fire Department arrived on scene. Working together with Officer Kesterson and Sergeant Richard Nichols, first responders re-entered the apartment despite extreme conditions described as floor-to-ceiling smoke with zero visibility. During the rescue efforts, responders located and removed a second child and an adult from inside the residence.

The second child was transported by Gulf County EMS to the hospital, while the adult victim was transported by Sergeant Nichols in his patrol vehicle in an effort to expedite emergency medical care.

At this time, the two children, approximately 5 and 10 years old, along with their father, remain in critical condition.

“I would like to commend our officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, Sheriff’s Deputies and all responding agencies for their valiant and heroic actions during this incident,” said Chief Jake Richards. “Their courage, teamwork, and willingness to place themselves in danger to save others exemplifies the very best of public service. Our thoughts and prayers are with this family as they fight toward recovery and healing.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the appropriate authorities.
