SAFERWATCH DISTRICTWIDE ALERT TEST – SEPTEMBER 14th

Gulf District Schools would like to make our families and community aware that a SaferWatch school safety alert test will be conducted on Monday, September 14, 2026, as part of Florida’s statewide school safety efforts.

THIS IS ONLY A TEST. There is no emergency at Gulf District Schools.

The test is designed to help ensure that school emergency alert systems are properly connected and able to communicate with law enforcement and emergency response agencies when needed.

During the test, some individuals may receive or observe multiple Raptor Alert notifications or other test-related safety alerts. Please do not be alarmed.

Gulf District Schools takes the safety of our students and staff seriously, and routine testing of our emergency communication systems is an important part of maintaining school safety and emergency preparedness.

Remembering September 11 – 25th Anniversary and Heroes’ Day

Dear Gulf District Schools Families,

Tomorrow marks the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. For many of our students, September 11 is an event they know only through history. As educators and parents, we have an important responsibility to help the next generation understand what happened that day, remember the 2,977 innocent lives that were lost, and honor the extraordinary courage and sacrifice shown by first responders, service members, volunteers, civilians, and the passengers of Flight 93.

In Florida, September 11 is officially designated as 9/11 Heroes’ Day. State law requires students enrolled in middle and high school Civics or United States Government courses to receive instruction on the history and significance of September 11. This instruction includes the events surrounding the attacks, the heroism of first responders and civilians, the tremendous outpouring of charity and unity that followed, and important discussions regarding security and civil liberties.

Our teachers have been provided guidance and resources from the Florida Department of Education to assist them in presenting these lessons in an age- and developmentally appropriate manner.

As we observe this important anniversary, we encourage families to talk with their children about September 11 and the lessons that emerged from one of our nation's darkest days. It is an opportunity to remember those we lost, honor those who ran toward danger to help others, and reflect on the courage, service, unity, and love of country demonstrated by Americans in the days and months that followed.

As Commissioner Henry Mack reminds us, even in that darkest hour, "Americans chose one another and rose from tragedy stronger and more united".

We are grateful for the partnership of our families as we work together to develop the next generation of informed, responsible, and engaged citizens.

Port St. Joe Jr./Sr. High School is a flagship school within Gulf District Schools, and its campus, together with the District Office, represents the excellence, pride, culture, and class that our community expects from our schools.

Following consultation and discussion with Mr. Ron Hensley, there has been a mutual parting of ways regarding his role as Principal of Port St. Joe Jr./Sr. High School.

We want to be absolutely clear that, contrary to reckless and slanderous rumors circulating on social media, there is no criminal aspect to this matter. We ask our community to rely on facts rather than speculation and to allow the rumor mill to be put to rest.

Gulf District Schools appreciates Mr. Hensley’s service to our students, staff, families, and community, and we sincerely wish him every success in his future endeavors.

Our focus remains where it has always been: our students, our schools, and providing the highest standard of education and leadership for the Gulf County community.
