Leadership Through Learning

Last week, Sergeant Harrison, Sergeant Burd, Sergeant Guillerm, and Sergeant Fischetti had the opportunity to attend the FBI-LEEDA Command Leadership Institute (CLI), hosted by the Titusville Police Department.

The Command Leadership Institute is an advanced leadership program designed for law enforcement supervisors and command staff. The course focuses on effective leadership, organizational development, communication, ethical decision-making, and strategies for leading agencies through the challenges of modern policing.

By investing in professional development and continuing education, our supervisors are better equipped to lead with integrity, strengthen our organization, and continue providing the highest level of service to the Port Orange community.

We would like to thank the titusville_pd for hosting this outstanding training and for their commitment to developing law enforcement leaders.

PO260002551 - McKenna's Place theft arrest

On April 28, 2026, at 0436 hours, McKenna's Place video surveillance captured a subject stealing the AC unit. During a thorough investigation by the Port Orange Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division, the vehicle used and the suspect were later identified.

On June 11, 2026, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Dakota Buncik for grand theft with damage to personal property valued over $1000.00.

At 4 p.m., Port Orange Police detectives located Buncik and took him into custody for his warrant.

Buncik was additionally charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia, and tampering with evidence.

A federal jury has found Anthony Joseph Brulewicz, a/k/a “Tony Montana” (54, Port Orange) guilty of four counts of distribution or possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, four counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of use, carry or possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking offense. Brulewicz was charged as an Armed Career Criminal and now faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years, up to 205 years, in federal prison.

Brulewicz sold a total of six fi****ms and approximately 30 grams of methamphetamine to a confidential informant over five law enforcement-controlled purchases. The fi****ms included three pistols, two shotguns and a rifle, all sold from the defendant’s residence. During one of the drug trafficking offenses, the defendant used, carried or possessed a firearm in furtherance of that crime.

This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives and the Port Orange Police Department.

Early this morning, after fleeing from multiple law enforcement agencies, Erich Gaitings of Apopka, FL, made his way into Port Orange, where officers were ready to welcome him. Stop sticks flattened his tires, a Volusia Sheriff's Office PIT maneuver ended the pursuit, and multiple units made sure there were no more getaway attempts. Great coordination by all involved!

On June 2, 2026, 44-year-old Robert Tokarz of Virginia entered the City of Port Orange driving a stolen vehicle. While in the city, Tokarz entered a local nail salon and stole the keys to a customer's vehicle before fleeing, now in the victim's car.

Shortly thereafter, Officer Lulu located the stolen vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. Tokarz refused to stop and fled westbound, initiating a pursuit that continued out of the city limits. Deputies from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, including Sheriff Mike Chitwood, assisted in the pursuit.

During the incident, Tokarz contacted dispatch and claimed to be armed with an AR-15 rifle and threatened to shoot at law enforcement officers in an apparent attempt to discourage pursuit. His threats did not deter the responding officers and deputies, who continued their coordinated efforts to safely apprehend him.

The pursuit ultimately came to a safe conclusion when OnStar remotely disabled the vehicle, allowing law enforcement to take Tokarz into custody without further incident.

Tokarz was arrested and charged with multiple local offenses and was also found to have active warrants from the Commonwealth of Virginia.

We appreciate the teamwork and professionalism displayed by all agencies involved in bringing this incident to a safe resolution.

UPDATE- Florencia has been located in good health and reunited with her family.

UPDATE- Florencia was observed walking westbound on Dunlawton Avenue, passing the Port Orange Annex building (1395 Dunlawton Avenue) at approximately 1500 hours.

MISSING / ENDANGERED PERSON
Florencia Vila (71) is diagnosed with Dementia and left her residence this morning on foot. She was last seen in the area of Herbert Street and Golden Gate Circle. Florencia was last seen wearing a black shirt, pink shorts, white sandals, and carrying a red purse (see actual photo). Florencia is approximately 5'01" and 160 lbs.

🚲 Heading out on your e-bike this summer? If you are, remember to ride smart, ride safe, and follow the rules of the road.

Keep in mind: not all motorized bikes qualify as e-bikes under Florida law. Some motorized or electric vehicles are designed for off-road use only and may only be operated on private property — not on public roadways, sidewalks, or shared-use paths. This can include certain electric bikes, motorized bikes, and dirt bikes.
Before you ride, check with the manufacturer to understand how your vehicle is classified and where it can legally and safely be operated.

Safety reminders:
✅ Use your bell or voice when passing
✅ Watch for pedestrians, cyclists, and traffic
✅ Use lights and reflective gear at night
✅ Riders under 16 must wear a helmet
✅ Follow posted speed limits and share the path responsibly

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE & NEW BEGINNINGS AT POPD

The Port Orange Police Department gathered to celebrate the incredible achievements, dedicated service, and bright futures of our sworn personnel. Please join us in recognizing these outstanding individuals!

First, we are thrilled to officially welcome Officer Kennedy and Officer Kilmer, who were formally sworn in during the ceremony. We are excited to watch them serve and protect the Port Orange community with honor and integrity.

🎖️ Detective Lowery – Award of Merit
Detective Lowery was presented with the Award of Merit for his exceptional work on a deeply challenging case. Thanks to his meticulous and thorough investigation into a violent apartment break-in—where a victim was assaulted with a weapon by an ex-boyfriend, the suspect was ultimately convicted and sent to prison, bringing justice and closure to the victim.

🎖️ Alpha Shift – Unit Citation
Congratulations to our Alpha Shift for earning a Unit Citation! Following a high-dollar burglary at a local apartment complex, these officers moved fast. They quickly identified the primary suspect and, within just a couple of days, successfully apprehended both the suspect and a co-defendant after they attempted to flee the area. Incredible teamwork and swift action!

Finally, we honored the retirement of Officer Pierson, who is stepping down after 21 years of dedicated service to our city. For much of his career, Officer Pierson was a staple of our Motor Unit, representing POPD at numerous motor rodeos and bringing home multiple awards for his elite riding skills. Thank you for more than two decades of keeping our streets safe, Officer Pierson, enjoy your well-deserved retirement!
