Today, we pause to remember September 11, 2001 — a day that changed our nation and our lives forever.

We remember and honor the courage of the first responders, service members, and everyday heroes who stepped forward in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

We remember not only those who lost their lives that day, but also those whose lives continue to be lost to illnesses related to the events of September 11.

We remember the families who were forever changed and the countless lives impacted in the years that followed.

May we never forget that day.

May we never forget the tragedy, but also the strength, compassion, and unity that emerged in the days that followed.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

The first day of school is Thursday September 3rd.

Hundreds of students will be walking to and from school and school bus stops - many for the first time.

All motorists share the responsibility of exercising extra caution during this busy time of year to help keep our young students safe.

To help enhance safety, the Port Jervis City Police Department will deploy dedicated School Crossing Guards near each of the schools during morning arrivals and afternoon dismissals.

Parents and caregivers are encouraged to review the following pedestrian safety reminders with children, provided by AAA of New York:
• Look both ways before crossing the street.
• Cross only at corners and designated crosswalks.
• Obey police officers, school crossing guards, and traffic signals.
• Watch for turning vehicles.
• Be extra alert during bad weather.
• Do not run or play near traffic.

Motorists:
• Drive cautiously and obey all posted school zone speed limits.
• You must stop for a school bus from either direction when its red lights flash and the stop arm extends, even on divided or multi-lane highways in New York.
• Avoid distractions—keep your eyes on the road and stay off electronic devices. Do not text while driving.
• Watch for pedestrians and bikes: Yield to people at crosswalks, look out for student cyclists, and check blind spots, sidewalks, and driveways carefully before backing up.

We hope all students and staff have a great, safe and fun school year!
