Department History
Back in the 1860's, Port Huron was protected from the ravages of fire by an organization known as the Eagle Hose Company. It was made up of a group of volunteers who were engaged in other various trades or businesses in the town but who responded to the alarm in case of fire. They were a group of stalwart young men who took great pride in their organization and their duties as f

ire fighters. In those days, it was considered a matter of community service to belong to this group whose activities were social as well as civic. The Port Huron Fire Department is said to be among the first in the State of Michigan. The Sixth Ward Hose Company was duly organized October 20, 1875, under the name of "Deluge Hose". In the year 1877, the volunteer company disbanded and the city installed a salaried part time fire department. These men were generally engaged in other occupations but slept in the engine houses and were ready for any emergency call. In 1901, a full time department was installed. Then Fire Chief Frank J. Schaller recalled how, in the 1890's when he joined the department, two and three-horse hitches were used. "The horses were all in stalls at the rear of the house. It was a thrilling sight to watch those trained animals spring to their places under the harness in front of the carts at the sound of the alarm. Of course, the fire department always had the fastest horses obtainable and everything on the road gave way before them." At that time, Engine Co.'s No 1 and 2 were equipped with hose wagons, chemicals and ladder wagons, all three-horse hitches, and No. 3, at the North End, had two-horse hitches. In 1904, an American LaFrance steam pumper was purchased. Up to this time, pressure was obtained from the pumping station of the city water department. Horses continued to be used in the fire department up until 1913, when the first motor-driven apparatus appeared on the city streets. Hose Company No. 4, at South Park was added to the department about 1907. Fire Department Administration
The administrative staff consists of the Fire Chief, Fire Marshal and Div. The administrative staff is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the fire department as well as scheduling fire prevention inspections, public education programs, following up on citizen complaints, and record keeping. The Fire Chief is required to assure that all federal, state and local laws are complied with. Fire Employment
Parties interested in becoming fire fighters with the Port Huron Fire Department must have completed a minimum of Fire Fighter II training as certified by the MFFTC. Certificates of training verifying successful completion of:

Yesterday, Port Huron Firefighters responded to a residential structure fire where crews safely rescued a dog from the home.

TRI-Hospital EMS personnel were already on scene for the incident and quickly provided immediate care to the rescued dog, utilizing a pet oxygen mask and oxygen therapy until St. Clair County Animal Control arrived to transport Buddy for further evaluation and continued care.

We would like to thank Lakeport Animal Hospital for accepting Buddy for overnight monitoring and treatment. We remain hopeful for a full recovery for this sweet pup.

This incident highlights the outstanding teamwork between multiple responding agencies and disciplines working together to protect both lives and property.

We also want to recognize the quick actions of nearby neighbors who observed smoke coming from the residence, immediately called 911, attempted to alert the homeowners, and helped confirm no one was inside the home. Due to their prompt actions, firefighters were able to contain the fire damage to a portion of the residence; however, significant smoke damage had already spread throughout the home.

Thankfully, no occupants or responders were injured, and no one was home at the time of the fire. Our thoughts are with the displaced family as they begin the recovery process following this difficult event.

This week, Port Huron Fire Department welcomed 3 new firefighters to the department. As part of the onboarding process, their first two weeks will consist of full 8-hour training days focused on preparing them for shift assignments, department operations, equipment familiarization, policies, and the expectations of the job. It’s a busy but important process as we work to build a strong foundation before they transition onto the floor with their crews.

The City of Port Huron Fire Department would like to recognize and congratulate several members of Port Huron Professional Fire Fighters Union Local 354 who participated in the Fight For Air Climb at Ford Field this past Sunday.

Firefighters Lackowski, Nastasy, Wasil, Smith, Moses, and Crossley joined 345 firefighters from across the State in completing the climb while wearing full turnout gear and SCBA. All of our members completed the challenge with finishing times between 13–15 minutes.

Each climber in Detroit took on approximately 2,800 stairs, symbolizing the daily challenge faced by individuals living with lung disease—where every breath matters.

Events like these highlight the physical fitness, determination, and teamwork our firefighters demonstrate both on and off duty. Great job representing the City of Port Huron and Local 354 with pride.

Thank you for thinking of us!

At Earl Smith Distributing Co, we believe in supporting those who serve. Today, we had the honor of donating a supply of Phorm Energy to the Port Huron Fire Department. 🚒

We specifically selected flavors that give back, like the Folds of Honor Cherry slush, which helps provide educational scholarships to families of fallen or disabled service members.

To the men and women of the Port Huron Fire Department: thank you for your bravery, your sacrifice, and your service! 🫡🔥

🚨SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES 🚨

The Port Huron Fire Department is proud to partner with fire departments across St. Clair County to help spread awareness about fire safety through MI Prevention and the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Through this collaboration, we’re helping provide FREE smoke detectors and carbon monoxide (CO) monitors to residents throughout the county. These life-saving devices are critical in giving families early warning in an emergency—and they truly save lives.

If you or someone you know may need working smoke or CO detectors, we encourage you to reach out and learn more about this program.

Strong partnerships make safer communities—and we’re proud to stand alongside our fellow departments in St. Clair County to protect the people we serve. 🔥👨‍🚒

🏠 Where to Install Detectors:
• Install smoke detectors on every level of your home, including the basement
• Place smoke detectors inside and outside of sleeping areas
• Install CO detectors near sleeping areas and on every level of your home

⏰ When to Replace:
• Replace smoke and CO detectors every 10 years (or sooner if recommended by the manufacturer)
• Change batteries as needed (unless you have sealed 10-year units)
• Test all detectors monthly to ensure they are working properly

⚠️ Important Reminders:
• We cannot replace hardwired detectors
• Landlords are responsible for ensuring rental properties have properly installed and working smoke and CO detectors

Working detectors save lives—make sure yours are ready when you need them most. 🔥👨‍🚒
