Everything we do comes back to the community we serve. During the 2026 City Employee Address, City Manager James Freed spoke with employees about the importance of working hard, building trust, and remembering the purpose behind the work.

While these remarks were delivered directly to City staff, the message is just as important for our residents to hear: every project, service, and decision starts with a commitment to serving the people of Port Huron and earning their trust along the way.

Tree canopy survey work will take place throughout Port Huron from September 16–18. 🌳

Crews will be measuring and photographing trees as part of ongoing research for the City’s Forestry Management Plan. This data will help guide future efforts to strengthen and revitalize Port Huron’s urban tree canopy.

Survey crews will be wearing identification while completing this work. No trees will be removed or pruned as part of this data-collection effort.

This year’s ceremony will feature a quieter and more reflective format, focused on remembrance and honoring those who were lost. There will be no formal speeches, r***e volley, choir, or dove release as in previous years.

The morning will include:

-Two Memorial Displays featuring the names of the police, fire, and EMS personnel who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

-Three Memorial Wreaths representing Police, Fire, and EMS, placed between the memorial displays.

-Multi-Agency Honor Guard maintaining a continuous Casket Watch throughout the ceremony.

-A Quiet, Solemn Tribute centered on reflection, remembrance, and paying respects. The ceremony will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., reflecting the approximate timeline of the September 11 attacks.

This memorial ceremony will provide an opportunity for members of our community, first responders, city leaders, and visitors to stop by, spend a moment in quiet reflection, honor those who were lost, and pay their respects.

In observance of Labor Day, City of Port Huron offices and facilities will be closed Monday, September 7.

Please also note the following schedule changes:

• The Recreation Department will remain closed Tuesday, September 8 through Friday, September 11 due to building maintenance.
• Refuse pickup will be delayed by one day during the holiday week.

Roads are always a hot topic, so I wanted to provide a snapshot of the historic level of road rehabilitation work we have been able to complete over just the past five years.

This is only a five-year lookback. If we expanded the window to the past ten years, the amount of road work completed would be nearly double what is reflected here. The progress over the last five years is significant on its own, but it is also part of a much larger, sustained investment in our road system over the past decade.

We have also strategically used our local street mileage to leverage tens of millions of dollars in federal grant funding, allowing us to significantly expand the amount of road work we could otherwise not accomplish with local dollars alone.

I know the work can never happen fast enough, and there will always be more roads that need attention, but the pace of our progress is significant. When compared with communities of similar size, we are moving aggressively and making measurable progress at a rate we should be proud of.

🚧 Conner Street Closure Begins Monday, August 31

Beginning Monday, August 31, Conner Street will be closed to traffic between Electric Avenue and Military Street for the Conner Street Reconfiguration Project.

The project will convert Conner Street into a one-lane, one-way street traveling westbound and includes roadway reconstruction, resurfacing, sidewalk and ADA ramp upgrades, storm sewer work and traffic signal improvements.

A posted detour will be in place during construction. Intermittent lane closures may also occur on Electric Avenue and Military Street. Access to local businesses will be maintained from Military Street and/or Electric Avenue.

Construction is expected to be completed by October 15, 2026.
