Jack Kerouac's classic novel, "On the Road", was first published on this day in 1957.

šŸ“– Developed in the 1940s through a series of notebooks, ā€œOn the Roadā€ is a ā€˜roman Ć  clef’ – a fictionalized novel about real events that uses fictitious names for the people involved. In this case, Kerouac appears as narrator Sal Paradise as he travels the United States & Mexico with his friends.

šŸ“– Kerouac’s first draft of ā€œOn the Roadā€ was written in a span of three weeks in April 1951. Living in New York City at the time; he typed the manuscript onto a 120-foot long ā€œscrollā€. The 1957 published edition was based on a revised version of that scroll.

šŸ“– Finding a publisher proved difficult for Kerouac until his manuscript was finally purchased by Viking Press. Though initial critic reactions were mixed, ā€œOn the Roadā€ was successful enough to bring the author instant fame and notoriety.

šŸ“– Today, this novel is seen as a defining work of the Beat Generation (a Post-WWII literary subculture), and has been named as one of Modern Library’s Best 100 Novels of the 20th Century. Many musicians, artists, and writers have been inspired and influenced by Kerouac and his work.
