One of the longest-serving firehouses in Westchester County, Putnam and Mellor Engine and Hose Company Firehouse, also known as the South Main Street Firehouse, was constructed in 1888 in the Queen Anne style. The building was home to the Putnam Engine and Hose Company, which was founded in 1854, and Mellor Hose Company, which was separated from the Putnam company in 1894. The firehouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and is the only firehouse in Westchester County to have received such a designation.

Unfortunately, the building had to be abandoned as an active firehouse in 1995 following a rock slide behind the structure. Putnam and Mellor were temporarily displaced and eventually relocated to their current home – the South End Fire Station (51-53 Grace Church Street, Port Chester, NY). This new firehouse was completed in 2001 and the South Main Street Firehouse was demolished in 2007.

Westchester County Police are investigating a fatal collision caused by a wrong-way driver this morning on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Rye Brook.

At 5:08 a.m., County Police received several 911 calls reporting that a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of travel had collided with another car. The location was approximately a half mile south of King Street.

Upon arrival, officers found that one of the vehicles was fully engulfed in flames. The driver of that car was pronounced deceased at the scene. He has yet to be identified.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was removed from his car and taken by ambulance to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he is receiving medical care.

The full circumstances of the collision remain under investigation by Patrol officers, members of the Accident Investigation Team and detectives from the General Investigations Unit.

Traffic continues to be diverted off the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway at Ridge Street. One lane of travel on the southbound side of the parkway also remains closed due to the ongoing investigation.

Additional information on this incident is not anticipated to be available until tomorrow.
