Did you know crab spiders can change their color to match the flowers they're on? It's not instant, but within a few days they will shift their pigments so they blend in better with their surroundings.

Flowers are beautiful on their own, but giving them a closer look reveals a whole other world of amazing natural processes.

Check this out! Mike Forsberg and Andy Caven are pedaling the 'Whooper Highway' from the Texas Gulf Coast all the way to Central Saskatchewan — an incredible 2,500-mile journey completed over two months!

This inspiring adventure highlights endurance, conservation, and the remarkable migration route of whooping cranes. Follow their journey online and keep an eye out — they just might be pedaling through your town!

The observation period for the City Nature Challenge has ended and we are over 1,000 observations!

We had a busy weekend of nature events at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center to help boost observations. Friday night we held a mothlighting event to observe nocturnal insects. Saturday morning, Sebastian Casarez guided a spring migration bird walk, and Sunday the Port Aransas Spoonbills competed in the annual Great Texas Birding Classic Big Sit, counting birds throughout the day.

If you took wildlife photos this weekend, it's not too late to upload them to iNaturalist!
And if you missed out but still would like to help, the next stage of this BioBlitz is to help confirm species identification on all of the observations made.
Just click on the "Needs ID" section and help us verify that observations are correct. https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/city-nature-challenge-2026-mustang-island-texas

Next step is identification, and anyone can help from anywhere! April 28th-May 10th is the time to upload any observation photos made during the weekend, and help others identify/verify the species in these observations. The final counts for this year will be made on May 10th.
