Port Angeles School District is proud to announce the promotion of Daniel Horton to the position of Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach ( pending board approval). As a respected coach at Port Angeles High School, Horton steps into the varsity role following an impressive 11-year tenure as an assistant within the program.
Horton coached 11 years as an assistant under Mike Poindexter, who recently retired. The hiring ensures a seamless transition for a program known for its competitive excellence. Over his 11 seasons on the girls basketball staff, Horton has been instrumental in cultivating a culture that regularly produced League and District titles alongside multiple State Tournament appearances.
Beyond the basketball court, Horton brings a proven track record of varsity head coaching success within the district. For the past four years, he has served as the Head Girls Soccer Coach, leading the Roughriders to two state tournament appearances. His extensive coaching resume spans six different sports in the district, including football, basketball, soccer, softball, baseball, and tennis.
"Daniel brings an incredible amount of passion and professionalism to the role of head coach," said PAHS Athletic Director Jarom Packer. "Having worked across so many sports in our district, he has seen and learned from a multitude of different head coaches. This unique background allows him to build a program that reflects the best practices of successful coaches before him, while still infusing the team with Coach Horton’s own unique touch. He knows exactly what it takes to compete in the Olympic League, and we are excited for the future of Roughrider girls basketball under his leadership."
Horton expressed great pride in taking over the program and a clear vision for its future.
"I am not looking to just 'fill a vacancy.' I am looking to build upon the winning standard we have set over the last decade," Horton said. "Having been embedded in the Roughrider culture for 11 seasons alongside Coach Poindexter and Jennifer Rogers, I know our students, I know their families, and I know exactly what it takes to win here. My goal is to ensure our program’s winning trajectory continues without interruption, while pushing our athletes to reach their highest potential both on the court and in the classroom."
