Welcome, Spring! Though with the mild weather we have been experiencing all winter, it has felt like spring for a few months now. These past weeks we celebrated International Women's Day listening to nostalgic music selections from countries all around the world. And we welcomed new music therapy intern Ben who joins us from Texas. He is a voice major who also plays guitar. Our staff has also been busy updating our continuing education requirements by recertifying in First Aid / CPR and Dept. of Health Food Handler training, some of the many ways we strive to keep participants at the center healthy and safe.

A couple more video sessions from intern Madison:

1 - Sing Along – What a Wonderful World / Somewhere Over the Rainbow
(We will start with some singing to warm up our voices and minds. Sing along with me to “What a Wonderful World” and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.”)

February greetings! We have been busy busy since the new year began creating reports, updating materials, taking some time off, streamlining processes and juggling as part of the OlyCAP team. The best part was that our music therapy intern, Madison, successfully completed her internship with us. Her next focus is to finish her Master's, take the national exam and apply for a WA state license. It probably seems like the journey will never end but it will. Madison is intern number 61 for me as a clinical training director. Wow! And next year will mark 50 years for Encore! Adult Day Center. Another wow! See below for links to some of Madison's virtual sessions.

December greetings! A little before Christmas this year, Hanukkah week begins this coming Sunday. As an introduction to the celebration, I shared some of the more well-known music and songs that accompany the holiday with our music therapy intern Madison. Music is an accessible and meaningful way to recognize and honor the variety of cultures that surround us, but with which we may not be that familiar. Included below are links to some familiar favorites. As you will see and hear through the music, it is a joyful Hebrew holy day, the festival of lights.
We at Encore! are here to serve our community of older adults needing social experiences and family caregivers who need a break.
In gratitude . . .

November greetings!
We recently participated in the Great ShakeOut drill and engaged in a lively discussion of emergency preparedness. We realized that only a few of us would fit under the table near the large windows, so a good idea was to grab some of the many blankets we keep on hand to cover ourselves (some created and knitted right here at the center) in case the glass shattered. We enjoyed a festive, dramatic pipe organ concert by Jim on the Holy Trinity instrument on Halloween and honored one of our Navy vet participants for the upcoming holiday, singing Anchors Away, listening to stories of his time in the Pacific highlighted with pictures he brought in to share. It is always great to share stories, and even better to have a place to share them with others like Encore!

1-Encore Complete the Song Title bugs (How many of these creepy "creepy crawly" songs can you name? We tried the last year, so this is an encore!)

2-Ghost Riders (One of the pieces I also played on Halloween organ. Anyone recall the magnificent voice of Vaughn Monroe?)

Hello, October Thursday!
At the center we recently reviewed a song that has been associated with the return of Autumn: "Autumn Leaves." It was one of the rare songs to have been a hit in a few different forms, first as a French song, then with English lyrics as well as a number one instrumental solo piano version. The most popular performances include singer / actor Yves Montagne (1949), Nat King Cole (1955) and Roger Williams (1955). We watched clips of all three, read the lyrics and sang it together. Nat is still a popular favorite. While listening we have gorgeous trees with colorful leaves to look at through our large wall of windows. Every day they remind us of the changing seasons right before our eyes. How wonderful that we have such a beautiful song to mark the occasion.

1-Encore Identify the Song Color (At a time when crowds are seeking out colorful fall foliage, especially in Vermont, let's see how many of these colorful songs you recall.)

Thursday greetings!
It has been a busy month with holidays, vacations, medical appointments, national conference, program reports, new participants and new meal service. Local wildfires continue to burn and, alarmingly, grow larger contributing to some poor air quality. The moon has been shining, the stars twinkling and, if you are reading this, we are still here. At the center we have been enjoying the singing talents of our intern Madison who recently learned and performed the song below, "Don't You Know." This is one of the many pop songs that started out as classical or opera but was arranged with new words to appeal to a larger audience. Enjoy!

1-Encore Exercise2 BrainDance (Wake up the brain with these body stretches.)

2-Encore Labor Day songs2 (How many more of these do you recall?)

Hello, Thursday! Wow, where has the time gone? Labor Day weekend is upon us already. Today I have included a link to a video that will introduce you to our music therapy intern Madison who joins us from Illinois State University where she is completing her master's degree. Summer backpacking in the Olympics has been more of a challenge this year due to wildfire smoke and several closed areas of the park, including both the North and East forks of the Quinault and the entire southern Staircase area around Lake Cushman. There have also been small fires along the Dosewallips, Hamma Hamma, South Fork Hoh and Queets rivers as well as a few road washouts. Let us appreciate the beautiful place we call home and enjoy the best day possible.
