🔥🏃‍♀️ HELP SUPPORT SPECIAL OLYMPICS WASHINGTON! 🏃‍♂️🔥

The Clallam County Sheriff's Office is proud to participate in the 2026 Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Washington on Friday, June 26th.

The Torch Run will begin at 7:00 a.m. at Laird's Corner in Port Angeles, with law enforcement officers, corrections staff, community members, and Special Olympics supporters carrying the Flame of Hope through Clallam County.

We invite the public to come out and cheer on the runners and join us at two special community participation points along the route:

⭐ 8:30 a.m. – Port Angeles Waterfront
Join Sheriff Brian King, Port Angeles Police Chief Brian Smith, Lower Elwha Police Lieutenant Jimmy Thompson, Special Olympics athletes, and their families for a community walk along the waterfront.

⭐ 12:45 p.m. – E. Fir Street & N. Blake Avenue, Sequim
Join Sequim Police Chief Mike Hill, Special Olympics athletes, and their families as they walk through Carrie Blake Park and help carry the Flame of Hope into Sequim.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is the largest public awareness and fundraising event benefiting Special Olympics Washington. For many local athletes, the purchase of Torch Run shirts and donations made through fundraising pages are the primary source of funding that helps provide year-round sports training, competitions, health programs, leadership opportunities, and unforgettable experiences.

We are asking our community to support our local Special Olympics athletes by making a donation to the Clallam County Law Enforcement Torch Run team. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps create opportunities for athletes to compete, grow, and succeed.

⚠️ SCAM ALERT – CLALLAM COUNTY RESIDENTS ⚠️

The Clallam County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about an ongoing phone scam that has been reported throughout the county over the past several weeks.

The caller is impersonating law enforcement personnel, often identifying themselves as Sgt. John Keegan, a deputy, sergeant, or lieutenant with the Clallam County Sheriff's Office. The scammer tells victims they have a legal issue, missed jury duty, or have a warrant for their arrest.

In a recent report, the scammer instructed a resident to withdraw $6,000 from their bank account to resolve the alleged warrant. When the resident stated they did not have that amount available, the scammer asked how much money they did have and claimed the courthouse bail payment system was down. The scammer then offered to meet the resident in the Courthouse parking lot to collect the money.

🚨 THIS IS A SCAM.

The Clallam County Sheriff's Office will never call you and demand money, ask you to withdraw cash, request gift cards, cryptocurrency, or arrange to meet you to collect payment for warrants, jury duty violations, or other legal matters.

While these stories may sound unbelievable, scammers have become increasingly sophisticated and convincing. Unfortunately, people across the country continue to lose money to these schemes.

✅ If you receive a call like this:
• Hang up immediately.
• Do not provide personal or financial information.
• Do not send money or withdraw cash.
• Contact the Clallam County Sheriff's Office directly using a trusted phone number to verify any claims.

We appreciate the residents who have taken the time to call the Sheriff's Office to verify these suspicious calls. Their vigilance has helped prevent others from becoming victims.

Please share this post to help warn your friends, family, and neighbors.

🏆 **Commendation Award Recipients – Ralph Parsons & Christopher Mahr** 🏆

The Clallam County Sheriff's Office is proud to recognize County Facilities employees Ralph Parsons and Christopher Mahr with a Commendation Award for their exceptional service and dedication in support of the Clallam County Jail.

As County Facilities workers, Ralph and Christopher have played a vital role in helping modernize and improve our 46-year-old correctional facility. Over the past year, they have consistently gone above and beyond their regular duties to complete numerous projects that have enhanced jail operations and improved working conditions for staff.

Among their many accomplishments, they helped convert storage into an employee's Fitness Room, transformed former office space into functional Clinical Services work areas, coordinated the movement of furniture throughout the facility, and played a key role in creating a new medical examination room through extensive renovation, retrofitting, painting, and fixture installation.

Their professionalism, adaptability, craftsmanship, and commitment to public service have been evident in every project they have undertaken. The improvements they helped make will continue to benefit our staff, inmates, and facility operations for years to come.

Congratulations Ralph and Christopher on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for your outstanding service to Clallam County and the Clallam County Jail.

OPNET Assists in Arrest of North Carolina Cold-Case Homicide Suspect

In December of 2025, an OPNET detective was contacted by a detective with the Concord Police Department in Concord, North Carolina. The Concord PD detective inquired about local police contacts with 43-year-old Johnny S. Talbert, who was the main suspect in a 2008 double murder in Concord. The OPNET detective, who works for the Port Angeles Police Department, was familiar with Talbert from multiple police contacts with Talbert throughout his career. A check of PAPD records showed approximately 288 contacts with Talbert since the first police contact in Port Angeles in November of 2011, including 14 arrests – two of which were felonies.

On May 21, 2026, the Concord Police Department obtained a fully extraditable warrant for Talbert’s arrest. The warrant lists charges of two counts of First-Degree Murder and one count of Robbery with a Firearm or Other Dangerous Weapon. OPNET detectives assisted in locating Talbert in the 2300 block of W 18th Street, where PAPD officers took him into custody without incident. Talbert is currently being held in the Clallam County Jail, pending extradition.

Further questions regarding the case should be referred to the Concord Police Department. The Concord Police Department press release can be found here: https://concordnc.gov/Services/Community/News/ID/439/Concord-Police-Department-Charge-Suspect-in-Sun-Drop-Murders Anyone with additional information regarding Talbert or the murders is encouraged to call 704-920-5000 or 704-93-CRIME to remain anonymous.

The charges contained in this document are only allegations. A person is presumed innocent unless and until he or she is proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The Olympic Peninsula Narcotics Enforcement Team (OPNET) is a multi-agency team dedicated to the enforcement of narcotics laws and violent crime in Clallam County and Jefferson Counties. Participating agencies include the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, Port Angeles Police Department, Sequim Police Department, United States Border Patrol, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Port Townsend Police Department. OPNET’s primary focus is removing drug dealers from our community by identifying, locating, apprehending, and prosecuting offenders who deliver illegal narcotics such as he**in and methamphetamine.

🇺🇸 On May 15, 2026, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office hosted our annual Law Enforcement Memorial BBQ and Ceremony honoring the law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty and those who continue to serve our communities each day. We waited to share this post until the event photos were completed, and we are proud to now reflect on this meaningful day of remembrance and fellowship.

This year’s memorial especially honored our own fallen Deputy Wallace “Wally” Davis and U.S. Forest Service Officer Kristine Fairbanks, whose courage, sacrifice, and dedication to service will never be forgotten.

This year, we also had the honor of celebrating the life and service of recently retired Sheriff’s Office employee Jim Borte, who recently passed away. Most of Jim’s family attended the BBQ where Sheriff Brian King, retired Sheriff Bill Benedict, retired Undersheriff Ron Cameron, and Judge Dave Neupert shared memories of Jim and reflected on the tremendous impact he had on the Sheriff’s Office and Clallam County during his 34 years of service.

Jim was a brilliant grant writer who secured significant funding for public safety initiatives throughout his career. He also had a natural gift for teaching traffic safety classes, where his humor and personality made him well-known and appreciated by countless community members. Jim’s contributions to our agency and our county were immense, and it was an honor to recognize his legacy alongside his family and friends.

The day began with our annual BBQ attended by active and retired law enforcement officers, volunteers, dispatchers, prosecutors, and community members from across the Olympic Peninsula. The BBQ is funded through the Sheriff’s Office Memorial Fund, which was established through generous donations made by retired law enforcement officers participating in the annual Sheriff’s retiree LEOSA qualification shoot. We also extend sincere appreciation to Clallam County Sheriff’s Advisory Board member Barbara Sandford, who generously contributes to the BBQ each year.

Following the BBQ, the memorial ceremony was held at Veteran’s Memorial Park in Port Angeles.

Sheriff Brian King was joined by Clallam County Commissioner Randy Johnson, Port Angeles Mayor Kate Dexter, and Sequim Police Chief Mike Hill, who each shared remarks honoring the service and sacrifice of law enforcement professionals.

A special thank you goes to retired CCSO Sgt. Randy Pieper, who organized this year’s memorial ceremony, continuing a tradition he has faithfully carried out each year. Sgt. Pieper worked alongside Deputy Wally Davis and continues to honor Wally’s memory by ensuring a wreath is laid at his gravesite annually.

We also extend our appreciation to retired Detective Jim Faddis and retired Deputy Mike Backus, who generously provide and manage the audio equipment each year — an essential part of ensuring the ceremony is meaningful and heard by all in attendance.

CCSO Chaplain David Byer delivered the invocation, while vocalist Amanda Bacon performed a heartfelt rendition of God Bless America. The American Legion Riders provided the Flag Line in support of the ceremony.

The Honor Guard included Clallam County Sheriff’s Deputies Hector Eagan, Cody Brooks, and Ross Cameron, along with Sequim Police Department Honor Guard members Roderic Sisk, Taran Johnson, and Paul Dalidienas, who conducted the honors during the ceremony. Bagpiper Rick McKenzie performed Amazing Grace, providing a moving tribute to the fallen.

We were honored by the attendance of many members of the public who joined us in remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice and supporting those who continue to serve.

Following the ceremony, attendees gathered at Ocean View Cemetery for a wreath laying at Deputy Wally Davis’ gravesite in remembrance of his life and service.

Photographs from this year’s memorial were provided courtesy of Keith Ross of Keith’s Frame of Mind and CCSO volunteer Alan Barnard, who leads our Bike Patrol and also serves on the Clallam County Sheriff’s Advisory Board.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office sincerely thanks everyone who participated, attended, and supported this year’s memorial. We will never forget those who gave everything in service to others.

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office is proud to once again support the 2026 Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting Special Olympics Washington!

The Torch Run is scheduled for Friday, June 26, 2026, and will traverse from the west end of Port Angeles, culminating at the 7 Cedars parking lot where runners, friends, and family can come together to celebrate this special event.

At the conclusion of our portion of the run, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will pick up the torch and continue the run with their team. This is a unique event that brings together law enforcement agencies from across the Olympic Peninsula, united in support of Special Olympics athletes and the mission of inclusion.

Last year, the Law Enforcement Agencies of Clallam County raised enough money to earn recognition on the back of this year’s official LETR shirt under the “Honor Roll” — an accomplishment made possible through the generosity of our community.

This year, we’ve set a goal of raising $5,000 to help provide opportunities, programs, and support for Special Olympics athletes across Washington State.

You can help by:
🔥 Making a donation
🔥 Purchasing an official LETR shirt
🔥 Sharing this post to help spread the word

Every dollar raised helps empower athletes and support inclusion through sports.

CLALLAM COUNTY SHERIFF BRIAN KING NAMED SHERIFF AT-LARGE TO STATEWIDE LAW ENFORCMENT ORGANIZATION

(Lacey, WA) — Clallam County Sheriff Brian King has been elected by his peers to serve on the 14-member Executive Board of the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC). The election took place during the association’s May meeting in Spokane. The Executive Board helps guide WASPC’s policy priorities, advocacy efforts, and overall strategic direction.

“We are very pleased Sheriff King has stepped up to serve,” said Steve Strachan, WASPC executive director. “He has quickly earned a reputation as a respected leader across Washington, and his election by fellow sheriffs and chiefs reflects the strong confidence they have in his leadership and judgment.”

“I am honored by the opportunity to serve alongside such dedicated law enforcement leaders from across our state,” said Sheriff King. “WASPC plays a vital role in supporting collaboration, advancing best practices, and strengthening public safety, and I look forward to contributing to that important work.”

Founded in 1963, WASPC represents executive and senior management personnel from law enforcement agencies throughout Washington. With more than 900 members, the association includes county sheriffs and police chiefs, as well as leadership from the Washington State Patrol, the Washington Department of Corrections, and representatives of several federal and tribal agencies.

WASPC is the only association of its kind in the nation that brings together leaders from local, state, tribal, and federal law enforcement into a single organization working toward shared public safety goals. The association provides critical resources, training, and support to law enforcement agencies across the state, serving both members and non-members.
