Pearl River County Master Gardeners

Pearl River County Master Gardeners Through the Master Gardener program, individuals are trained and certified in consumer horticulture and related areas.

The Master Gardener Volunteer program is a great way to gain horticultural expertise at a low cost, meet other avid gardeners, share gardening experiences, get connected to the community, and belong to a well-respected and educational organization. In exchange for 40 hours of educational training, individuals are required to return 40 hours of volunteer service within one year of their training. This service should help county Extension offices with horticulture projects that benefit their local communities. After the first year, volunteers are required to return 20 hours of volunteer service and to attend 12 hours of educational training to remain certified as Master Gardeners. Continuing education is offered to encourage long-term commitments. Most certified Master Gardeners serve five to seven years. The Master Gardener approach helps the local Extension office reach a broader audience than is possible with only one or two agents. It also provides the local office a way to serve the public and, at the same time, develop a supportive clientele group. Volunteers help extend the educational arm of the university to the public by providing horticultural information based on university research and recommendations.

The PRCMG had a great meeting yesterday. Our speaker, Cali Campbell, with Global Wildlife, was entertaining, informative, and provided a lot knowledge about growing plants for such a diverse group of animals in the not so ideal Louisiana climate. Mikayla Mettler shared the various programs and special events they have for interacting with different animals. We enjoyed getting to hold and play with the horns and giraffe tail they brought. Kay Cline brought a beautiful daylily arrangement, and Lenore Ladner brought the wonderful traveling plant.

Another rainy day. Today some hardy MG pruned and prepared about 500 trees for The Crosby Arboretum plant sale that will be October 9 & 10. We were too damp and dirty for pictures, so just a picture of the trees after the work was done. These are some great trees that we planted in January. Workers today were Frank Jackson, Mona Leal, Lisa Brockert, Carmen Ulfers, Teresa Covington, and Mary Donahue.

On Tuesday, September 1st, Master Gardeners Anne, Monette and Suzanne welcomed guests at the Stennis Farmers Market with smiles, seeds, plants and MSU Publications. The Stennis shoppers look forward to visiting the table accepting passalong plants and seeds to take home. Master Gardeners enjoy sharing their knowledge and helping educate others.
Great job representing our group Ladies!

Another wonderful MG outing. Learning about wonderful caterpillars at the Pass Christian Library. The video, The Extraordinary Caterpillar, was made by Homegrown Grown National Park and Doug Tallamy and presented by the Pass Christian Garden Club, in coordination with the MS Gulf Coast Native Plant Society. Jennifer Buchanan, President of the MSGCNPS introduced the video and answered questions. We really enjoyed seeing closeup pictures of the caterpillars, some using a microscope. Afterwards some Great appetizers were shared at Bacchus on the Beach. MGs on this excursion were Bertha Page, Lisa Brockert, Teresa Covington, Anne Margiotta, Mona Leal, and Monette Springer. Registration to join the Master Gardeners is still open.

We are pleased to announce our special guest speakers at the Herb Social and Educational Workshop!!

🌿 Sherry Hough of Tea Garden Apothecary. Sherry handcrafts small-batch teas and other botanical preparations. Her passion is making herbalism approachable—helping people understand the synergy between plants, the preparations we create from them, and how thoughtful formulation brings those elements together with purpose.

During our Preserving and Storing Herbs Workshop, Sherry will share some of the techniques she uses to preserve and properly store herbs.

You can find Sherry at the Funky Falcon in Picayune. She will have some of her teas available at the workshop.

🌿Audrey Driscoll, former Unit Chair of The Herb Society of America—New Orleans Unit and a dedicated member for 30 years!
Audrey will share information about The Herb Society of America, membership opportunities, herb plant sales, educational workshops, and more.

Of course, we will also have more fun giveaways!
