🚒 Swift Water Technician Training

Here are some photos from your Pontiac Firefighters’ Swift Water Technician Training conducted this past Friday at the Marge Cline Whitewater Course on the Fox River in Yorkville.

Our firefighters spent the day developing and reinforcing specialized skills needed to safely operate in swift-water and moving-water environments. Training like this is an important part of keeping our personnel prepared to respond when someone’s life is at risk in or around the water.

The Marge Cline Whitewater Course provides approximately 1,100 feet of whitewater and is located along the Fox River in downtown Yorkville.

A big thank you to everyone who helped make this valuable training opportunity possible!

Pontiac Fire Department Enhances Water Rescue Capabilities

Last Friday, the Pontiac Fire Department successfully concluded a 3-Day Swift Water Technician course at the Marge Cline Whitewater Course on the Fox River in Yorkville.

This intensive training provided our personnel with valuable hands-on experience and instruction designed to enhance our department’s ability to respond to water-related emergencies. By completing this course, our department has taken a significant step forward in strengthening our water rescue capabilities and ensuring our personnel are prepared to respond when our community needs us most.

A BIG thank you goes out to the instructors from the Romeoville Fire Academy for their expertise, guidance, and instruction throughout the course. Their knowledge and commitment were instrumental in making this training a valuable experience for our personnel.

Over the next several days, we will be sharing photos from our training to give our community a behind-the-scenes look at the intense and demanding training our firefighters just completed. These photos will highlight the physical challenges, teamwork, and skills required to operate safely and effectively in swift-water rescue situations.

We would also like to extend a huge thank you to the Pontiac Recreation Center and Pontiac Township High School for allowing our personnel to utilize the PTHS pool over the past month. This pool training played an important role in helping our personnel become physically conditioned and prepared for the demands of the Swift Water Technician course, while also helping us maintain the skills and physical capabilities necessary to perform when called upon.

We are proud of the dedication our personnel continue to demonstrate through training and professional development, and we are committed to continually improving the services and capabilities we provide to the Pontiac community.

Pontiac Fire Department A-Shift had a great time participating in High Five Friday at Washington Elementary School!

Our firefighters enjoyed greeting students as they arrived and starting the school day with plenty of high fives, smiles, and positive interactions. It’s always great to connect with the students in our community outside of an emergency and help build those relationships.

25 Years Later, We Still Remember. 🇺🇸

Twenty-five years have passed, but we will never forget the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

We remember the innocent victims who never made it home.
We remember the firefighters, police officers, EMS providers, and other first responders who ran toward danger.
We remember the families who were forever changed.
And we remember the courage, sacrifice, and unity that followed.

25 years later, their names still matter.
Their stories still matter.
Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

🚒 Swift Water Tech Training Day 2 🌊

The Pontiac Fire Department completed Day 2 of Swift Water Tech training today!

The day began at the Flanagan Memorial Pool, where our firefighters completed their mandatory swim test. Once everyone successfully completed the test, the crew headed to the Vermilion River to put their training into action, working through a variety of skills and scenarios in the water.

Tomorrow, training continues as our firefighters head to the Fox River in Yorkville, where they will operate in swift-water conditions and continue practicing critical water rescue and lifesaving skills.

A BIG thank you to the staff at Flanagan Memorial Pool staff for allowing us to use their facility on such short notice. Your willingness to help made an important part of this training possible, and we truly appreciate your support! 👏

Training like this helps ensure our firefighters are prepared to respond safely and effectively when called upon to assist someone in a water emergency.

.Funnel Clouds Possible Through The Afternoon...

Atmospheric conditions are favorable for the development of funnel clouds.

These funnel clouds normally only protrude a few hundred
feet downward from the parent cloud, rotate or spin like a top,
and last a few minutes before dissipating.

These funnel clouds rarely touch the ground and typically do not
pose any sort of hazard. The atmospheric conditions that these
funnel clouds develop in do not support strong, damaging
tornadoes. However, on extremely rare occasions, these funnels can
briefly touch the ground and produce very minimal, if any, damage.

If threatening weather approaches, move indoors to a place of
safety. The National Weather Service will continue to closely
monitor the situation.

🚒 Pontiac Fire Department Swift Water Training Underway! 🌊

The Pontiac Fire Department began its three-day Swift Water Technician Course on Wednesday through the Romeoville Fire Academy.

Today, our Water Rescue Team personnel will be conducting training in the Vermillion River near Humiston Riverside Park. On Friday, the team will travel to the Fox River in Yorkville to complete the final portion of their training.

A total of 12 Pontiac Fire Department personnel are participating in this course, with an additional 6–8 personnel planned to attend in May 2027.

📢 PUBLIC NOTICE — THURSDAY AFTERNOON

If you are near the Vermillion River by Humiston Riverside Park Thursday afternoon, you may hear a loud noise similar to a gunshot. Please do not be alarmed.

As part of their training, Pontiac Fire Department Water Rescue Team personnel will be practicing how to deploy a rope across the river using a line gun, a specialized tool used during water rescue operations.

This is a planned training exercise and there is no cause for concern.

Honoring Illinois Firefighters — Duty, Pride, and Tradition

A sincere thank you to Senator Chris Balkema for this picture that honors the men and women who have given so much to protect others.

The Illinois Firefighter Memorial is dedicated to the firefighters of Illinois who have given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve with courage, pride, and honor.

The idea for an official Illinois firefighter memorial began in 1993, when the Illinois Fire Services Association unanimously agreed that a monument should be created to honor firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice. That vision became reality on May 13, 1999, when the memorial was unveiled and dedicated on the southwest corner of the State Capitol lawn in Springfield.

The memorial features an original bronze sculpture consisting of four life-size firefighters in full gear, a child, a ladder, and a hose. The figures stand on a 14-foot-high cairn made of Renaissance stone, surrounded by 2,400 red paver bricks.

This memorial stands as a lasting reminder of the sacrifice, courage, and dedication of Illinois firefighters. It gives us a place to remember those who made the supreme sacrifice and to honor those who continue to answer the call to serve.

We remember those who gave everything. We honor those who continue to serve. And we will never forget their sacrifice.

* WHERE...Portions of northern and central Illinois near and south of
I-80, as well as all of northwest Indiana.

* WHEN...Until 7 PM CDT /8 PM EDT/ Friday.

* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat
illnesses especially after several days of dangerous heat.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Consider altering outdoor plans. If outdoors for prolonged periods of
time, wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing. Take action when
you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
