It never gets old imagining what life was like on the famous 101 Ranch - generally thought of as the largest "diversified" farm and ranch in the world during the early 20th century. The 101 was self-sustaining from beginning to end, employed a diversified work force, and ambitiously pursued opportunity wherever they could find it! Their motto - Go BIG or Go Home!! The Miller family, owners of the 101 Ranch and its signature 101 Wild West Show, was responsible for so much of the real success that built Ponca City and the surrounding area! Come visit the Cherokee Strip Company and learn more about the Millers, the 101 Ranch, and the unique history of the Cherokee Strip region.

And yes, its true........we are moving the Cherokee Strip Company online April 1st and physically relocating to 5000 W. Fountain Road by this summer! So that means.......we are closing our downtown antique mall at 409 East Grand on March 31st. We have sales up to 40 percent off throughout the store, so come find a treasure before March 31st! Our store location downtown will reopen in 2020 as the Cherokee Strip Event Center!!

A tidbit about the neighborhood

Picture of the Week: Big V Ranch, "Watering the Herd" southwest of Ponca City in the Salt Fork River Valley, circa early 1900s

The historic "Big V" Ranch was a grand neighbor to the famous 101 Ranch in the Salt Fork River Valley, southwest of Ponca City. Starting with 160 acres acquired during the Cherokee Strip Land Run of 1893, William H. Vanselous expanded by purchasing settler and allotment lands plus leasing additional Ponca Indian lands to grow into his larger than life 10,000 acre operation.

On a tip from Zack Miller of the 101 Ranch, Vanselous bought a LARGE herd of unbroken mules from Texas. He then made a reputation by breaking, training and selling the mules in St. Louis. He became one of the largest and best mule dealers in the United States – even providing mules to the British Army in the early 1900s.

George Miller, co-owner of the 101 Ranch, also considered Vanselous the “best farmer in the entire country.” He grew corn, wheat and other grains, harvesting thousands of bushels each year. The "Big V" corn husking competitions drew national attention. Vanselous also developed a drought-resistant white corn that would save many farmers during the Dust Bowl. After Vanselous died in 1930, the ranch passed to his children until it was finally sold and subdivided into 17 parts in the early 1950s.

Today, the stately ranch home has been painstakingly restored by his grandchildren as a local landmark and event center which honors the legacy of Vanselous and his beloved Big V Ranch.

History about the Salt Fork River Valley in the Cherokee Strip region of Oklahoma!

Joe Miller loved a good show and he was known for putting on one of the best. Beginning in 1905 with estimates between 60,000 to 75,000 guests from the National Editors Association convention watching, the 101 Ranch put on a rodeo show that would eventually tour throughout the United States and around the world generally known as the 101 Ranch Wild West Show. The show employed over 1200 performers at its peak, was as self-sustaining as its famed 101 Ranch, and reflected broad diversity including African-Americans, Native Americans, and women in headline roles. Joe Miller loved his beloved 101 Ranch and loved sharing a glimpse of it with the rest of the world.

Ponca City is also known for its regional Veterans Day parade, which will be held on Saturday, November 3rd at 10:45 am in historic downtown Ponca City. Please join us as we celebrate and honor those in the military, both past and present, who have given their time and talent in service to the United States of America.
