Last week, the Pequannock Junior Firefighters traveled to the Passaic County Fire Academy for an Engine Operations/Hoseline Advancement drill. Junior members participated in multiple evolutions and scenarios within the Academy’s training building, stretching hoselines up stairwells, down hallways, and into basements to simulate various structure fire scenarios.

Interested in taking part in opportunities like these? Reach out to [email protected]! The Pequannock Junior Fire Department accepts members ages 14–17 who reside in Pequannock Township or neighboring municipalities.

This past Thursday at 3:18 pm, Companies 1 & 2 were dispatched to Cedar Crest for an elevator rescue. Upon arrival, one occupant was found to be in an elevator that was stuck between the first and second floors. Power to the elevator was secured so that it could not move unintentionally and the individual was safely removed.

Company 1 would like to extend a huge and sincere THANK YOU to the staff and management at The Home Depot in Riverdale!

We recently decided that it was necessary to begin replacing our aging inventory of tools that our members & engineers use to fix & maintain all of our emergency equipment. The team at Home Depot store #0919 generously supported this project by providing a significant discount on tools and tool storage, helping us keep the project affordable.

In addition, they went above and beyond by donating a brand new shop air compressor, completely free of charge, to replace our previous unit that had unexpectedly failed.

We are incredibly grateful for the generosity of The Home Depot and we deeply appreciate their aid in making sure that Company 1 is always prepared to effectively respond to all of our town’s emergencies!

On Sunday, Companies 1 & 2 responded to several alarm activations around town caused by broken water pipes and sprinkler heads due to the extreme cold. In some cases, these broken pipes resulted in significant damage to buildings and property contents.

Below are a few tips to help homeowners and business owners reduce the risk of frozen or burst pipes during sub-freezing temperatures:

For Homeowners:
-Maintain indoor temperatures no lower than 55°F, even when away.

-Open interior doors to allow warm air to circulate to plumbing.

-Insulate pipes in basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, and exterior walls.

For Business Owners:
-Ensure dry-pipe and wet-pipe systems are properly maintained.

-Verify that heat is functioning in all sprinklered areas.

-Use temperature monitoring or alarms if available.

Last night, our members took the initiative to drive throughout our response area and clear away snow from buried fire hydrants. While many hydrants were well taken care of, we unfortunately found that many more were not. On some streets, there were no accessible hydrants at all.

Our quick and reliable access to water is critical for keeping you, your family, and your neighbors safe. We urge all residents to take a few extra minutes while out shoveling to clear any fire hydrants on their property (at least 3 feet in all directions as well as a clear path to the street).

We would like to thank all of the residents who took the time to diligently clear out space around their hydrants. Seconds matter in an emergency, and your help makes all the difference.

Last night at 9:32 pm, Companies 1 & 2 were dispatched to a residence for the report of a strong odor of smoke throughout the home. Upon arrival, crews found a strong burning odor and a light haze of smoke inside. The home was thoroughly searched and the source was identified and removed.
