If youโ€™ve never been to Haverstraw Bay Park, youโ€™re missing out on one of our communityโ€™s true treasures.

This week Office for the Aging Walk with Ease participants enjoyed a fantastic walking tour led by Mike Dimola from the Rockland County Division of Environmental Resources. Along the way, everyone learned about the local environment, the parkโ€™s rich history, and some fascinating stories that truly brought the landscape to life.
The group loved the experience so much, theyโ€™re already asking when the next walking tour will be!

Thatโ€™s a wrap for this season of the American Eel Research Project!

Our net has officially come out of the water, marking the end of another successful year monitoring American glass eels during their incredible migration that spans nearly a thousand miles from the Sargasso Sea all the way to the freshwater lakes, rivers, and streams of Rockland County, including the Minisceongo Creek in West Haverstraw.

Each spring, these young eels arrive in our local waterways, and monitoring their numbers helps scientists better understand their populations and long-term conservation needs. This year, with the help of our dedicated volunteers, we counted and safely relocated over 2,800 glass eels over the nearest upstream barrier to support their journey inland.

This project is coordinated in partnership between the Rockland County Soil and Water Conservation District and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and we couldnโ€™t do it without the amazing people who show up rain or shine to make this work possible.

Thank you to all our volunteers for your hard work, passion, and commitment to protecting our local ecosystems! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿงก๐ŸŸ

Meet Newton Park (yes, we named him ๐Ÿ˜Š)!

Newton is an Eastern Newt living his best life in one of our county parks, and he has an important reminder for all visitors to Rockland County Parks: please do not hunt, trap, or interact with any animals.

Newton would also like to remind everyone to please not remove, injure, or destroy any trees, flowers, shrubs, or rocks. Keeping our plant and animal life untouched helps ensure these natural spaces remain beautiful and enjoyable for everyone. ๐ŸŒฟ๐ŸฆŽ

Letโ€™s help Newton keep our parks safe, healthy, and thriving for all to enjoy!

Each year, the Rockland County Soil & Water Conservation District partners with the Division of Environmental Resources and the Parks Department to enhance recreational fishing while helping to restore Brook Trout to waterways where they once thrived.

This year, 1700 Brook Trout were stocked in 7 different water ways, including the Ramapo River, the Mahwah River, Minisceongo Creek, Crum Creek, Demarest Kill, Stony Brook and the Sparkill Creek. Brook Trout are a native species and are a popular gaming fish with anglers in addition to being recognized as the official state freshwater fish of New York!
