During the Revolutionary War, Rockland's strategic location made it a critical link between the northern and southern colonies. The Ramapo Pass served as a vital corridor for troops, supplies, and communications, while control of the Hudson River was essential to George Washington's military strategy.

To prevent British ships from advancing north, massive iron chains were stretched across the Hudson—a remarkable feat of engineering and determination. Together, these natural and man-made defenses helped secure one of the most important transportation routes in the fight for independence. You can find some of the links of this iron chain on display at West Point.

From the Ramapo Mountains to the Hudson River, Rockland County wasn't just a witness to history—it helped shape it.

When we tell the story of the American Revolution, we often focus on famous generals and battlefield victories. But here in Rockland County, the fight for independence was supported by countless unsung heroes whose stories deserve to be told.

Women cooked meals, washed clothing, tended to the sick, carried supplies, and helped keep camp life functioning. Indigenous people served as scouts, guides, messengers, and allies, bringing invaluable knowledge of the land. People of African descent worked, fought, and supported the war effort in countless ways, both as soldiers and camp laborers.

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, we're shining a light on these lost voices and the critical role Rockland County played in the Revolutionary War.

History belongs to all who helped shape it. Learn more at explorerocklandny.com.

America’s 250th in Rockland County 🇺🇸
Episode 1: The General & The Traitor

As America celebrates its 250th Anniversary, there’s no better time to uncover the stories that shaped our nation and few places hold Revolutionary War history quite like Rockland County. 🇺🇸 🇬🇧 Step back into 1780 and discover how Rockland County became the backdrop for one of the Revolution’s most notorious acts of treason. 🤥

From Benedict Arnold’s infamous betrayal along the Hudson River shoreline to Major John André’s capture and ex*****on in Tappan, this story changed the course of American history forever. The best part? You can visit the historic DeWint House in Tappan, where George Washington once stayed and signed André’s death warrant. And you can tour the legendary ’76 House, also in Tappan, which is America’s oldest restaurant and once served as a gathering place during the Revolutionary era. ❤️🤍💙

History isn’t just remembered in Rockland County, it’s still standing. 📖
