Pomfret Budgets to be Presented at Monday Public Hearing,
Citizen Input Sought
First Selectman Maureen Nicholson, Board of Education Chair Leigh Grossman, and Board of Finance Chair Norine Reingold encourage Pomfret residents to attend the Public Hearing on Monday, April 27, at Pomfret Community School. The Board of Finance is seeking public input as it finalizes the proposed Fiscal Year 2026–2027 budget. The hearing will be held in the school cafeteria at 6:30 PM.
The proposed budgets for Fiscal Year 2026–2027 were presented to the Board of Finance on March 9. On April 6, the Board of Finance took action and requested reductions of $20,000 from the General Government budget and $80,000 from the Board of Education budget.
The current proposed budgets, reflecting these reductions, are as follows:
Board of Education: $12,160,903, representing an increase of $438,031 (3.73%) over the current budget of $11,722,872.
General Government: $3,576,769, representing an increase of $139,259 (4.05%) over the current budget of $3,407,614.
At these preliminary levels, the combined proposed budget totals $15,737,672. The Board of Finance has approved the use of $250,000 from the Town’s unassigned fund balance to help offset the mill rate. Based on current estimates, this would result in an approximate 1.41 mill increase over the prior year. This proposed level of spending is 3.81% over last year and incorporates the current rate of inflation of 3.3%*. The spending plan has not been set by the Board of Finance.
The Board of Finance will make its final budget recommendation after receiving public comment at the Public Hearing on April 27 at 6:30 PM at Pomfret Community School. Comments may also be submitted by email to: [email protected] or mailed/delivered to: Pomfret Board of Finance, 5 Haven Road, Pomfret, CT.
Copies of the proposed budgets are available on the Town’s website: https://www.pomfretct.gov/board-of-finance
The current mill rate is 20.725, which includes 19.89 mills for the Town portion and 0.835 mills for the Fire District portion.
The final mill rate will be established following the Annual Meetings in May of both the Town and the Fire District, at which their respective budgets will be voted on for the 2026–2027 fiscal year.
* For the 12 months ending March 2026, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released April 10, 2026.
