Pomfret Fire Department

Pomfret Fire Department About the Pomfret Fire Department The Pomfret Fire Department was established in 1934. The first rescue vehicle in the department was a 1946 Ford Panel truck.

In order to start the department, a few of the charter members actually put their houses up as collateral. Originally, the fire department had two stations, one in a barn across from X-tra Mart and one in a barn across from Rucky's General store. These two buildings housed the only two trucks that the department had at that time. The first fire truck owned by the fire department was a converted Ca

dillac since there were very few manufacturers of fire apparatus at the time. On October 2, 1978, the Pomfret Fire Department moved to its current location on RT 97, near the intersection of Hampton Rd and Deerfield Rd. This move put all of the apparatus in one location, and also put the station itself within a couple hundred yards of the geographical center of town. The Pomfret Fire Department serves the towns of Pomfret, Pomfret Center, and Abington, Connecticut. Responding to roughly 400 calls per year, we provide fire and EMS services to a population of about 4500 residents in a 41 square mile service area. The Pomfret Fire Department Serve the town with 1 Engine Tanks, 1 Tower Truck, 1 Engine Tank/Rescue, 1 Light Rescue Truck, 1 Forestry Truck, and 1 Fire Police Trailer. KB Ambulance Service is the transport unit for the town of Pomfret CT.

it was an honor to be at this year’s Memorial Day celebrations. Honoring those that gave so much should mean very much to all of us. For those who sacrificed may God rest them in peace.

To the Residents of Pomfret,

On behalf of the entire Pomfret Volunteer Fire Department, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude for the overwhelming support shown at tonight’s Annual Town Meeting. The unanimous passing of the amended tax abatement ordinance is a powerful statement of the trust and value you place in our department. While our trucks and tools are essential, our members are truly our greatest commodity. Seeing the community come together to support them tonight provided a significant morale boost, making every volunteer feel seen and appreciated for the hours of training and emergency responses they provide.

We do not take your support for granted and remain more committed than ever to protecting the lives and property of this community. Thank you for standing with us tonight.

With gratitude,

Brett Sheldon, Fire Chief

Pat Boyd, Fire Company President

To the Citizens of Pomfret,

On Thursday, May 14, 2026, our community will gather at PCS for a Town Meeting to vote on several items, including an important item on the call, "Amended Ordinance Regarding Tax Abatements for Volunteer Firefighters." This amendment has already been approved by the Fire District Board of Directors and the Board of Selectmen, and it now comes before you, the taxpayers, for final approval. Since 1993, Pomfret has maintained a progressive property tax abatement program for our volunteer firefighters, allowing up to $1,000 to be taken off their property taxes based on longevity, active service, call response, and training. However, following a change in State Statute in 2022, towns now have the option to increase this waiver up to $2,000 for qualified members. This amended ordinance seeks to adopt the higher limit to better recruit and retain members of the fire service in Pomfret.

While no volunteer firefighter serves for the sake of a tax waiver, these abatements are a vital tool for retaining the dedicated men and women who protect our town. The Pomfret Volunteer Fire Department is much smaller than it used to be, but we have a core group of about 20 members who consistently answer the call at all hours, day and night. Under this new structure, our most tenured active members would be eligible for the $2,000 abatement, while less tenured members would receive a smaller, proportionate amount. This is a meaningful way for the Town of Pomfret to recognize the sacrifice of our volunteers and ensure we can keep our ranks filled with experienced responders. We respectfully ask for your support of the amended ordinance this Thursday to help us continue serving our neighbors.

Respectfully,

Brett Sheldon
Fire Chief

Live burn training this past Saturday. we need to do this training at least once annually to keep our firefighting skills proficient. Thank you Back To Basics Fire Training for fascilitating this day for us. We truly appreciate the professionalism and expertise of your organization when it comes to fire training. Working with our mutual aid department Eastford Fire was awesome. this kind of training makes our departments work in unison with each other so when the time comes to put our skills to use we can do it flawlessly. Thank you Eastern Ct Fire School for the use of their burn facility to do our training. The support that you guys gave the local fire department is amazing

if you are in the need to burn brush, please remember that you need to obtain a permit for the Townhall prior to doing any burning. Please follow the instructions on that permit and when you light that fire, please exercise good common sense. Thank you.

Today marks the beginning of a new chapter for our department as we announce several significant leadership changes. After more than 25 years of dedicated service, long-time member and former Chief Derek May has concluded his time with us. Derek and his family are relocating to East Woodstock, where he will continue his career as a full-time member of the Muddy Brook Fire Department. While he will be sorely missed, we wish him and his family the very best and look forward to working alongside him as a member of a neighboring department.

Stepping into the role of Assistant Chief is Brian Geyer, who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. We are excited to see the impact of his leadership as we move forward. Additionally, we are proud to announce our new junior officers: Mike Dumouchel has been promoted to Fire Captain, while Nick Stellitano and Ron Johnson have been appointed as Fire Lieutenants. Each of these individuals brings a deep background of life and fire service experience to their new roles, and we look forward to the growth and dedication they will bring to the department in the years to come.

This past Monday, the Pomfret Volunteer Fire Department gathered at the Black Dog for our Annual Dinner, an evening dedicated to expressing our deepest gratitude to our members and their families for their unwavering service to the Town of Pomfret. Led by Fire Company President Pat Boyd and Fire Chief Brett Sheldon, the night was a celebration of the dedication that keeps our community safe. A particularly poignant moment was the recognition of Past Fire Chief and current Assistant Fire Chief Derek May, who was honored for his decades of tireless service as a firefighter, EMT, Fire Officer, Chief, and the Town’s Emergency Management Director. As Derek prepares to move to Woodstock later this spring, the dinner served as a meaningful opportunity to celebrate his incredible legacy before he begins his next chapter.

The department also took pride in honoring several other members for their exceptional contributions and milestones. We are thrilled to announce Nick Stellitano as our Firefighter of the Year; Nick will also be stepping into the role of the Town’s new Emergency Management Director. Additionally, we recognized the vital contributions of Firefighter Tom King, Chaplain and EMT Fr. Andrew Giourelis, Engineer/Firefighters Daren Rondeau and Ron Johnson, and Firefighter Zackery Morris.

To our award recipients, our entire membership, and the families who support them behind the scenes thank you for your continued commitment to Pomfret.
