FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

6/1/26

Yesterday PRFD crews along with City of Polson Fire Department, Lake County Search and Rescue, and CSKT DES filled over 500 sandbags yesterday and placed them in areas along the Skyline canal and a Minesinger residence in an effort to mitigate flooding. The skyline canal breached the road and was flooding the crop fields near Skyline and Caffrey. Heavy equipment was used to repair the road, and some water was diverted to a different area. The canal has lowered back down for the time being and the repair is holding. We are continuing to monitor the situation.

We have a reserve of filled sandbags and if your home is in danger of flooding we may be able to assist. You can send us a message on Facebook or call the office at 406-883-4244.

We want to thank all the agencies who assisted as well as Glacier Lake Sand and Gravel for getting us sand to fill the bags.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Today at 320pm PRFD was dispatched to the report of a burn pile in the White Swan area that was called in as it appeared to be getting away and the caller was concerned with the wind. The first arriving command truck observed a fire burning up a steep slope that was clearly larger then a burn pile. It then quickly grew and started climbing up into trees. Mutual aid was requested from City of Polson Fire Department, Chief Cliff Volunteer Fire Department and QRU, and CSKT Division of Fire. The terrain made access difficult however we were able to lay a lose line up to the fire and begin to extinguish it. It took a lot of manpower to get equipment up the hill and get a line around the fire, and we want to give a huge thanks to all the supporting agencies.

Fire is under control at this time and some work is being continued by division of fire.

Fuels are drying out fast, and we are expecting warm weather to continue this week without a high chance of precipitation. Please be cautious if burning debris.

🚒 Heres some information we had on display during our recent open house with our first due apparatus from all 4 stations. 🚒

You will notice the significant change in cost of fire equipment over the years. Some truck prices increasing 400%.

Radios that used to be around $1000 are now closer to $8000

Gear that used to be around $1800 per firefighter is now closer to $4000

Specialized tools such as extrication equipment continues to go up and requires to be upgraded and added to as cars change.

First we would like to thank everyone who came to the open house today. We had a great chance to talk with the community about the department and handed out several applications.

We had a couple of common questions come up that we would like to clarify for everybody.

First off was about the upcoming levy. This levy is replacing a levy that is sunsetting, not in addition to. If you look at your tax document, you will see 3 line items for the fire district. One is what we currently receive from county taxes, one is a permanent levy that was past a while ago that does not sunset, and 3rd would be the levy that is getting replaced. With the 3rd levy we are asking for a slight increase. This levy is used to pay for operating expenses such as fuel, insurance, and equipment costs such as turnouts, (fire gear), radios, etc. As our call volumes continue to go up as well as general expenses, we have a need for additional funds to pay for this.

The second item was about being a volunteer firefighter. We have positions for everyone from people who are able to fight interior structure fires to people who just are able to drive a water tender or help as support on incidents. People of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to apply if interested in helping your community.

We thanks the community for their continued support and hope everyone gets out and votes!
