Recognizing and Preventing Dehydration

With the summer heat in full swing, it’s essential to stay hydrated and recognize the signs of dehydration. Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluids than it takes in, which can be especially common during hot weather or physical activity.

Signs of Dehydration:
- Thirst
- Dry mouth and swollen tongue
- Weakness
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Confusion
- Dark urine
- Decreased urine output

Prevention Tips:
- Drink Plenty of Water: Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. Carry a water bottle with you to ensure you’re drinking enough throughout the day.
- Eat Hydrating Foods: Fruits and vegetables like watermelon, cucumbers, and oranges have high water content and can help keep you hydrated.
- Avoid Excessive Caffeine and Alcohol: These can increase fluid loss and contribute to dehydration.
- Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to help keep cool and reduce fluid loss through sweating.
- Monitor Fluid Intake: Pay attention to how much water you’re drinking, especially during physical activity or in hot weather.

When to Seek Medical Help:
Severe dehydration can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. If you or someone else experiences severe symptoms like extreme thirst, very dry mouth and skin, lack of sweating, low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, fever, or unconsciousness, seek medical help right away.

Remember, staying hydrated is crucial for your overall health and well-being. Make it a habit to drink water regularly, especially during these hot summer months. Stay safe and healthy!

Heat Stroke Awareness and Prevention 🌞💧

As summer kicks off, it's crucial to recognize the signs of heat stroke and take preventive measures.

Recognizing Heat Stroke: High body temperature (above 103°F), hot, red, dry, or damp skin, fast, strong pulse, headache, dizziness, or confusion, nausea or vomiting, loss of consciousness.

Preventive Measures: Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine. Stay cool by wearing lightweight clothing and a wide-brimmed hat, and use SPF 30+ sunscreen. Seek shade and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Plan wisely by scheduling activities during cooler parts of the day.

What to Do If Symptoms Occur: Call 911 immediately as heat stroke is a medical emergency. Move the person to a shaded or air-conditioned area. Cool down using cool cloths or a cool bath. Don’t give drinks if unconscious.

Heat Stroke vs. Heat Exhaustion: Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, cold/clammy skin, fast weak pulse, nausea, muscle cramps, and dizziness. Heat stroke symptoms include high body temperature, hot/red/dry skin, fast strong pulse, confusion, nausea, and loss of consciousness.

If experiencing heat exhaustion, move to a cooler place, use cool cloths, sip water, and monitor. Seek medical help if symptoms worsen.

Stay safe, stay cool, and check back next Monday for more tips!

Pollocksville EMS Bio

We started as a small EMT-Basic emergency service squad in the early 1960’s. Through the notice of increased needs in our community for a quicker response, a few compassionate individuals came together to answer this need. Thus, Pollocksville Emergency Services was born. Since then, we have grown, struggled, and prospered. Today we operate at the EMT-Intermediate level, which is a advanced life support designated level of emergency care. We are a non-profit, volunteer service. We are constantly looking for more volunteers to help grow and provide better care for our community and to constantly achieve our mission statement. Our mission statement is: “To provide emergency medical services to the best of our ability, to save the lives and property of the community in which we serve, while promoting outstanding services to our community with moral and ethical volunteer members. These volunteers are willing to give their time freely to the good of our community. Our volunteers will be held to the highest standards and continue to be role models for our profession, our education, and our young citizens of this community.” If you are interested in volunteering even if you are not a licensed provider, please contact us, and we will help you obtain your license. Our current Chief is Warren Franks (EMT-I). And our Assistant Chief is Jeffrey Tumas (EMT-P).
