Tuesday night’s training focused on boat operations, water rescue, sonar operations, trailer backing, portable pump operations, and gator operations. Training on the water is critical for our department, as the Polk City Fire Department responds to emergencies on both Big Creek Lake and Saylorville Lake.

Water rescues require specialized equipment and regular training to ensure our crews are prepared when emergencies happen.

Our current rescue boat is more than 20 years old, and we are actively working to raise funds for a replacement boat that will better serve our community for years to come.

It was a beautiful evening on the lake and a great opportunity for our members to continue building and sharpening these important skills.

As a reminder, wear your life jackets - we wear ours!

Today we celebrate Brock Mulder on his 1-year full-time anniversary with the Polk City Fire Department!

Brock joined the department in August of 2024 as a paid-on-call paramedic and quickly demonstrated his commitment to the fire service. He earned his Firefighter I certification in March of 2025 and was hired full-time shortly after.

In his first full year, Brock’s dedication and work ethic have already made a strong impact—earning him both Firefighter of the Year and Medic of the Year for 2025, as voted by his peers.

Congratulations, Brock, on this milestone and thank you for your continued service to the Polk City community!

Today we celebrate Lieutenant Brice Hibbing on his 15-year anniversary with the Polk City Fire Department!

Brice began his service in 2010 as a paid-on-call member and has since become a cornerstone of our department. Over the years, his dedication and commitment have not gone unnoticed—earning Firefighter of the Year in 2022, Officer of the Year in both 2023 and 2024, and Dedicated Member of the Year in 2024 and 2025.

In April 2023, Brice was promoted to Paid-on-Call Lieutenant, a role he continues to excel in while supporting and leading those around him. In March 2026 he was promoted to a Full-Time Lieutenant. Around the station, many refer to him as the “mascot” of the department, a testament to the energy, personality, and pride he brings to the team every day.

Thank you, Brice, for your continued dedication, loyalty, and service to the Polk City community. Congratulations on 15 years!

Last night, the Polk City Fire Department trained on pumping and drafting operations. Training began with reviewing the mechanical function of a fire pump before crews moved into hands-on evolutions focused on roll-up drills, hooking hydrants, flowing handlines, operating master streams, drafting operations, and pumping the brush truck.

With many miles of our jurisdiction not covered by fire hydrants, it is critical that our firefighters remain proficient in drafting and rural water supply operations to ensure we can provide effective fire protection throughout the entire community.

Last night, the Polk City Fire Department trained on essential ladder skills to stay sharp and ready for the job.

Firefighters worked with both the 24-foot and 35-foot extension ladders, practicing single-firefighter deployments as well as two-person operations. Crews also focused on safely carrying tools up and down ladders, window entry and exit, working from ladders, proper ladder carries, and bailout techniques.

Training like this builds confidence, improves safety, and ensures we’re prepared for whatever comes our way.

Thank you to the Iowa Fire Service Training Bureau for your continued support and the use of the training tower!

🔥 Member Spotlight: Jaron Johnston 🔥

Join us in welcoming Jaron Johnston to the Polk City Fire Department!

Jaron was born in Des Moines and attended Waukee High School before moving to the Chicago area, where he began a career in auto body repair and later became a Cadillac technician. While he enjoyed the work, he felt something was missing and was drawn toward a career with greater purpose. He returned to school, earning education through DMACC and Drake University in Clinical and Medical Health Sciences.

Jaron discovered his passion for healthcare last year but knew he still wanted the hands-on, blue-collar work he enjoyed. The fire service offered the perfect combination of both.

His inspiration to serve runs deep. Jaron has two uncles who served as firefighter/paramedics—one of whom sadly passed away after a battle with cancer. His legacy, along with the influence of his other uncle currently serving in Des Moines and his father, helped guide Jaron toward a life of service and making a lasting impact on others.

Jaron’s goal is to build a full-time career in the fire service while continuing the legacy of service in his family. He is currently working toward his Fire I certification through Rogue Training and will attend an EMT course this summer at DMACC.

Outside of the department, Jaron works as an Orthopedic Technician at Des Moines Orthopedic Surgery (DMOS). In his free time, he enjoys working on cars (with plenty of side projects), spending time at the lake, fishing, golfing with friends, and being outdoors with family.

Jaron shared that the Polk City Fire Department has welcomed him with strong camaraderie and mentorship, and he looks forward to serving the community alongside the team.

Welcome to the PCFD family, Jaron! 🚒
