PRESS RELEASE: Pocatello City Council to Hold Public Hearing on City’s Proposed Urban Forest Plan and Housing Plan

The Pocatello City Council will host a public hearing Thursday, July 2, at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall, 911 North 7th Avenue, to gather community input regarding the City’s proposed Urban Forest Plan as well as the Housing Plan.

• The Urban Forest Plan: The plan establishes a baseline assessment of current urban forest conditions, including management practices, funding, standards, and the overall condition of the community’s trees. It also outlines strategies to maintain an aging tree population, improve tree health and species diversity, and enhance the value of neighborhoods, public spaces, and local landscapes. Review online at: pocatello.forms.govos.com/f/PDSurbanforestplan

• The Housing Plan: The document includes an analysis of current economic and demographic conditions, existing housing stock, housing needs within the community, and strategies to help address those needs. Review online at: pocatello.forms.govos.com/f/PDShousingplan

Both plans may also be obtained by emailing [email protected] or by calling 208-234-6514. Agenda item information will be available the Monday prior to the hearing online at pocatello.gov/AgendaCenter or at the Planning & Development Services Department in City Hall.

The Housing Plan was identified as a priority project in the City’s Comprehensive Plan, regarding the Authentic & Affordable Neighborhoods vision element (pg. 58). The document includes an analysis of current economic and demographic conditions, existing housing stock, housing needs within the community, and strategies to help address those needs.

The updated Urban Forest Plan supports the goals and strategies outlined in the Comprehensive Plan especially, regarding the Environmentally Resilient (pg. 40) and Creative Community (pg. 63) vision elements. The plan establishes a baseline assessment of current urban forest conditions, including management practices, funding, standards, and the overall condition of the community’s trees. It also outlines strategies to maintain an aging tree population, improve tree health and species diversity, and enhance the value of neighborhoods, public spaces, and local landscapes.

PRESS RELEASE: Water Line Installation Begins June 24 on Howard and Gray off West Alameda Road

Beginning Wednesday, June 24, 2026, the City of Pocatello Water Department will begin a water line replacement project along Howard and Gray Avenue off West Alameda Road. Work will be completed in multiple phases, starting on Howard Avenue before progressing to Gray Avenue.

Construction will require temporary street closures and parking restrictions between 6:30 a.m. and approximately 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Every effort will be made to maintain local access to homes and properties throughout the project. Residents are asked to park vehicles away from active construction areas during working hours. Access to all properties will be restored at the end of each workday.

The project may result in brief water service interruptions. Residents within and near the construction area are encouraged to keep a supply of drinking water available as a precaution.

For safety, parents and guardians are asked to remind children to stay clear of construction zones and equipment.

Construction is expected to take approximately eight weeks to complete, though the schedule may change due to weather, site conditions, or other unforeseen circumstances.

Residents with questions about this or other Water Department projects may contact the Water Department at 208-234-6182. Additional information is available at pocatello.gov/water.

The ICCU Splash Pad at OK Ward Park is closed for the remainder of today (06/16) due to high winds, which is pushing the water away from the pad.

We anticipate reopening tomorrow, weather permitting.

Alameda Park Playground Improvements Underway!

Exciting improvements are coming to Alameda Park thanks to the partnership of several community organizations and the Alameda Neighborhood Association!

Parks & Recreation crews have fenced off the area where a new, larger playground will be installed. The swings shown in the photo will remain and be incorporated into the new play area. While construction is underway, the current tot lot will stay open. Once the new playground is complete, the tot lot will be replaced with a brand-new playground designed for children ages 2–5.

Please note that the renderings shown are examples of the playground designs. Final color schemes will be different and were selected with input from the Alameda Neighborhood Association.

Additional improvements include:
✅ A seating area with two benches in honor of Jamie Marley
✅ Additional park and basketball court benches
✅ Restroom painting
✅ A new drinking fountain

The Alameda Neighborhood Association recently helped plant flowers around the park's new sign, and we appreciate their continued partnership in helping make Alameda Park an even better place for the community.

We look forward to sharing more updates as this exciting project takes shape!

The playground replacement at Alameda Park aligns with the Mayor and City Council’s priorities of community beautification, economic development, and expanded recreational opportunities. The project also supports the goals and strategies identified in the Pocatello Comprehensive Plan 2040, particularly within the Outdoor Oriented vision element. A strategy of Goal 2 is to improve and maintain parks, trails, paths, and recreational facilities. These awesome kids from the Pocatello Police Department Summer Middle School Program were busy painting curbs and helping spruce up Historic Downtown Pocatello at Lookout Point.

One of the best parts of summer is seeing young people out learning new skills, working together, and taking pride in their community. These students are doing just that—and having some fun along the way!

Thanks for helping make Pocatello look great. We love seeing the next generation making a positive impact, one curb at a time.

A big shoutout to nick hottmann art for helping coordinate and assist with this project.
